The Sumatra Tsunami happened after a 9.1 magnitude quake.

I have NEVER seen footage like this, though. Holy shit!

There is going to be incalculable damage and loss of life.

The world is really changing. It's like every month, there's an earthquake or any other calamities. It's still fresh what happened to Queensland, New Zealand and now Japan. It's just scary. O.O

    Wow, this is awful. :(

And I believe that I saw the debris flip over a few cars, and that boat..... :/

My thoughts go out to all the people in Japan and all other affected areas, I hope I can find something I can do to try to help.

That first post there are people either riding their bikes or driving their cars away from the wave and at the end of the video, they got surrounded... that's awful.

I saw this live as it was happening. It was breaking news as our local news show came to air. I watched the water slowly move into land. Sad thing was seeing cars only metres away trying to get out of there but getting caught up.

Having Keaton live in Hawaii, and knowing we have many members here who live in Japan...this is just all very scary. My hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. I hope Japan can recover quickly.

To scale, this earthquake was two times less intense than the 9.1 Sumatra Quake.

The tsunami is expected to hit California in 45 minutes to an hour. The wave will be 6 feet by that time.

Iwate, Miyagi and east coast of Japan seem to be the ones that were really affected by both the quake and the tsunami...

I don't want to hear the final count of casualties.

How did you come to that conclusion? It's been said that this earthquake has possibly shifted Earth's axis for entire 10 cm and that could have a shitload of long-term effects on life on the Earth.

And btw, you have to remember that Japan is the best prepared country in the world for this kind of disasters. I can't even imagine the causalities and the damage if an earthquake of this magnitued happened anywhere near any other place with high population and highly developed infrastructure.

There have always been things like that in the past, but now there's almost 7 billion people on the Earth and we live in literally every corner of the world so the effects are more prominent now than they were 200 years ago when there was barely 1 billion people. Plus now you have the media to find out about things like this, while 200 years ago, people i Europe would probably have no idea that something like this happened in Japan.

But it doesn't meant that it was two times less intense.

Each whole number increase is a tenfold increase in energy released. So a 9.1 releases 200% more energy than an 8.9, I believe.
