The choice of singles is made by the label, sometimes with input from the band. The potential lead singles for "A Thousand Suns" were picked before the album was even finished, and the making-of DVD shows the band rushing to finish "The Catalyst" and "Waiting For The End" so one of them can be released - I assume this is how things normally go :"

They are very popluar, but not to the point they're exploited by tabloids and stuff.

So they're on a very good line.

They are pretty popular when I was in high school. But, I don't know what kids listen to now a days.

My local rock station just counted down the top 102 songs of the 2000s and In the End was first so.... I think seven other singles were on the list too.

A lot of people hate LP so they must be so damn popular.

in general last time i checked:
    50 million+ albums sold
over 30 million+ fans on facebook and 800,000+ suscribers on youtube

those some of the reasons why i think they are really popular

that is so true, everyone picks on linkin park but when it comes to their favourite band, they just go overly to dramatic on how good they are.

Oddly enough, there is some truth to both of those posts. Just like how in politics, the group that screams the loudest is usually the one that's losing, and they do it because they know their opposition is gaining ground.

I know this is a really old thread I'm digging up, but it's really shocking to see their like numbers on Facebook. It's grown to over 44 million and here's the list to compare with other facebook pages. http://fanpagelist.com/category/top_users/ <-- They're just right behind Katy Perry and are the most liked band.

I don't agree with everyone about Muse's popularity though. Sure they're huge in the Europe, but the most they've sold in the USA is gold status, which I can understand is what LP is only capable of selling at the moment. I'd say Foo Fighters is bigger than Muse and the current Linkin Park, but not by much. Green Day and Coldplay are the only "modern" bands that are proven to be bigger than LP, but their facebook likes are in the low 20Ks.

Anyway, I've read many articles and even comments from people like Grohl that rock music is at a dead state at the moment thanks to bubblegum pop. Many of you may not notice, but some of the biggest selling rock records in the past two years were by Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon. Yeah. And with the popularity of youtube vids and spotify, everyone has easier access to many different indie artists. It's uncool for bands now to be mainstream.
