LITE is the worst song LP has written since Meteora

...and it's all because of the lyrics. The song itself is not too bad, the intro even being pretty damn awesome but the lyrics...

Mike's raps are the worst ever both from the lyrical point of view and the flow. Chester's chorus isn't that bad, lyrically, but honestly rehashes everything we LP have sung about in their nu-metal days. Listening to LITE as the first song on the album, after the last album being ATS, really makes it quite jarring how badly written the lyrics of LITE are. It feels like a really awkward return to 'I want to feel, I want to heal' days.

I know the song gets a lot of love because it's supposively a nice meeting point for the old and new LP but lyrically, even HT's new metal verses weren't so so cheesy and awful. I know when MTM came out Mike said that he wasn't rapping because most of the raps he wrote sounded very cheesy. Back then I wished that he would have rapped anyway because Mike's verses> anyone else's verses, even if they're cheesy. But now, having heard LITE, I'm kinda glad MTM was mostly Chester.

 

They've definitely written worse songs since 2003. Hell, I love When They Come for Me but the lyrics are nowhere near as good as the cockiness of the track demands. You're gonna sit there and imply that Given Up is better written? That the Messenger isn't cheesy as hell? That Skin to Bone isn't full of cliches? That Lies Greed Misery was written by an adult?

 

While Lost In The Echo is definitely my least favorite song on Living Things, I don't think the lyrics are that bad.

There are definitely some cheesy moments; the line "ya'll go hard, I go smart" makes me want to cringe and laugh. But I also wouldn't exactly define it as a whiny song. I don't think it rehashes old lyrical ideas, I think the song is essentially Mike rapping about how Linkin Park has managed to outlast their old nu-metal peers. They went hard, he did the smart thing and evolved the sound. So while the word choice might be kind of silly at times, the message/story is still kind of interesting to me.

I woundn't call it the worst, it's definitely the most boring but it's in no way a bad song.
