Everyone who's probably gonna get hit by Sandy, be careful! Be sure to post updates here on the situation, so that we know you guys are okay! I'm here chillin in northern VA. Nothing too bad here yet, just constant rain and constant wind. Nothing we couldn't drive through though. I was evacuated from Christopher Newport University on saturday, which is located in Newport News, VA (30 minutes from the beach). Here's a photo of a bridge five minutes away from campus. https://twitter.com/_Nite/status/262753088459390976/photo/1/large That was 24 hours ago. I can only imagine what it looks like now. Old Dominion University, a school 20 minutes away, did not evacuate students. Last I checked in with someone, the flooding was so bad that a freshman dorm was completely cut off from the rest of the campus. Here's what that city looked like earlier today. https://twitter.com/MartinMMC/status/262920534524833793/photo/1/large
Better tell Patrick... [Stay safe, guys.] yes that was a spongebob joke. no you don't get to be offended.
I'm on the other side of the country so I'm fine, but my girlfriend is in it right now. We just got back from video chatting, and so far so good; she hasn't even lost power or anything. I'll be checking her back in the morning first thing, provided she's awake (she's kind of a late sleeper).
Times like this I am glad I live in an apartment building. My uncle lost power and has no way of getting here because they closed off all the bridges. Back up generators ftw!
Thanks for the well wishes guys. It got kind of chippy earlier but we've still been relatively fine here. The last big surge might come tomorrow afternoon, but so far so good. Hope anyone else on the east coast is staying safe. Manhattan in particular, yikes.
Would be fitting if it was a sandstorm though. But yeah, I've been wondering about that myself. Did not know that Sandy also hit Haiti. People living there have no luck at all, first the earthquake back in 2010, now the hurricane :/
Yup, inferno: It took a long time before enough fire fighters could reach the area (I'm guessing Breezy Point was hard to reach because of the weather, floods etc.). Already 50 houses are burned to ashes. They're currently doing the best they can to stop the fire from destroying more houses. http://tv.ibtimes.com/hurricane-sandy-devastates-haiti-death-toll-reaches-31-7115 http://www.democracynow.org/seo/2012/10/29/hurricane_sandy_kills_51_in_haiti There've been numerous reports of roof damage, floods, impassable roads etc. There are fears of disease outbreaks because of contaminated water and poor sanitation.
I don't know the feeling but I can imagine how bad that is...I'm very sorry for you guys! I hope everything will be normal again soon!
