    Django Unchained

Not exactly groundbreaking, but that's not why you watch Quentin Tarantino movies. If you're into his brand of stylish pastiche filmaking (particularly in the vein of Inglourious Basterds), you'll probably like this.

    Looper - 4/5

Not exactly what I was expecting, but it was enjoyable, nonetheless.

    Django Unchained - 4/5

It's interesting, while looking over the Rotten Tomatoes reviews before this came out, most of the reviews seemed to refer to this as "(just) another Tarantino movie." Some meant this as a positive, some as a negative. But I'll be honest, I don't see it. Django doesn't really remind me of any Tarantino film to date. Maybe Basterds, because of the whole oppressed protagonist rising up and taking revenge motif, but that's where the comparisons end for me.

One big thing I noticed this movie lacked was the typical clever, witty dialogue that Tarantino is known for. The dialogue in Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds reels you in with its charm. In Django, we've traded in that dialogue for a more straightforward brand. The characters talk about what's happening in the story, and the story progresses. Also, if I didn't know who wrote and directed the movie, I'd be very inclined to label it a "black comedy." This movie has more laughs than his other work, sometimes cheaply so. There is nothing clever at all about watching Samuel L. Jackson yell obscenities while dressed as a sassy old black man; it's just funny. There's also a lot of over the top parody of the spaghetti western genre, almost to the point of being outrageously corny and ridiculous. And yet, it never quite feels that way. Somehow, it works.

I'd also call Django Unchained the most beautifully shot of any Tarantino movies. There's some really great camera work and lighting. I think it's his most mainstream film yet, but it's a lot of fun. I'm gonna be seeing it again for sure.

Gone (2012) - It wasn't bad, but the end wasn't pleasing enough. 6.5/10

    Max Payne
    Compared to the game: 3/10
    Seperate movie: 5/10

It's a disgrace if we compare the it to the game, but if we forget that it's based on a game...it's not THAT bad. The problem is that I'm a big Max Payne fan and I hate this movie.
There are some cool elements from the game, like the graffitis or the places, but they just ruined the main plot. My biggest problem is that there aren't any songs from the game, and there aren't any lines from Max from the game. It just ruines the whole "Max Payne" feeling. And why the dream sequences aren't in the film?
Fuck this movie, I have to play out the 3 games to forget this bullshit.

    Cloud Atlas - Somewhere between a 6 and a 9. I can't decide.

Flight - 6/10. First 25 minutes was really good. Rest of the movie you can skip.

Resident Evil: Retribution - 4/10. Series keeps getting worse and worse. No idea what's going on anymore.

The Bourne Legacy - 6.5/10. Tried to be and felt like the Damon films at times, but nowhere near as good. Renner was great, though. Needs better writing around him.

    Definitely, Maybe: 10/10

One of the best romantic comedies ever made. Such a sweet film.

Damn. It came out two weeks ago in the United States, and has only just arrived here in Australia. Looks like I'm going to be seeing it before most of you.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [8/10]
As a reader of the book, I found the film to be enjoyable, even during the scenes in The Shire and what-not. I thought Martin Freeman played the role of Bilbo Baggins brilliantly, especially in The Shire when the dwarves make his home theirs for the night. The movie did feel long, but not in the sense that I didn't enjoy it because I could have happily sat through more of it.

So much violence and fucking epic fights in the one movie.

    Edit [14 hours after]:

    End of Watch [8/10]
That bromace! Y'all should get on this. Could have been less swearing, that's for sure.

Skyfall (2012) - 4/5 - Enjoyed it a lot. But I think ever since The Dark Knight, blockbuster movies have been running the "villain getting caught on purpose" to the ground!
