(Never thought I'd break my return-to-lurking streak with this...)

I've listened to In the End plenty of times, and something that has always irked me regarding the studio version are those two piano keys that aren't held during the intro of the song. They're both held the first two times they're played, but the third time, neither of them are.

Surely I'm not the only one that is irked by this? (I'm actually curious to know how many others noticed this and/or are slightly annoyed by it.)

The biggest problem in the song is that the strings are so unhearable. Just like in With You or in I'll Be Gone or in Faint.

The beginning of Faint are the strings, in fact I don't think there's a second of the song without strings... maybe the bridge.

lol, I just heard it, and all the parts with guitar don't have the strings.

I just checked with my monitors, haha, yeah it's there. I think half the time I'll notice these parts but I'll never consciously confirm them. Then when discussions come, I'm always blank on the subject

You're actually missing a lot of songs Malvar. Just about every other song by LP has strings. ATS which only has two, maybe three.

And yes, What I've Done does have strings and HT has songs with strings. Meteora has lots.

Also Faint, lol. The only one I can tell has strings in ATS is The Catalyst but they're not live.

Yes, almost all of their songs have strings but Malvar was just counting the ones that were recorded live and not programmed.

Has alot of synth with sound of strings, just check out the booklet, they always say when there are stings on the songs.

Well, I misunderstood you guys. You guys are right, there are alot of songs with strings. The ones that I said it's all live strings.

Papercut has "recorded" strings in the very end of the song.
Well if we count "programed"/keyboard strings:
    HTEP: Part of Me, Carousel
HT: With You, In The End, CFTI, High Voltage, My December
Reanimation: P5HNG ME AxWY, KRWLNG, WTH]YOU
Meteora: Somewhere I Belong, Easier To Run, Faint, BTH, Numb
MTM: LOATR, SOTD, What I've Done, HHH, TLTGYA, NRL, Blackbirds
ATS: Robot Boy, Iridescent, The Catalyst, The Messenger
LT: BID, I'll Be Gone, COG, RU, UIB, Tinfoil/Powerless
Yeah, most of them are just Synth Strings but still.....strings.

The intro is a very picked apart synth string.

No it doesn't. It doesn't even have synthesized strings on it.

Maybe you should check out the multitracks, because it's clearly has "recorded" strings on it.

Regarding the piano on the live intro of In The End - I’m actually not as bothered by that as I am by the lack of strings underneath the intro piano. As far as I can recall, In The End has rarely included the string parts when performed live (though there are some exceptions, including the extended 2004/Rock Am Ring intro), and the intro always feels quite empty without them, as if the bottom of the song has fallen out!

As for which LP songs have strings, I think it’s fair to say that a vast number (possibly the majority) have strings, whether sampled/synth/keyboard strings (like the Korg Triton strings on Hybrid Theory) or live strings. Breaking The Habit and Faint were the first songs to feature David Campbell’s live string ensemble. In my opinion, Faint has the most distinctive (and unique!) use of strings.

If it sounds like I’m rambling... it’s because I love strings :D

^Live strings were attempted/considered for Faint, but they ultimately went with the programmed strings from the original demo.
