I was watching New Divide live at iTunes 2011. What's that instrument Mike used at the start? I never saw it before. The thing he's waving his hand around.

    Theremin, or something?

    Edit: Yup, a theremin.

The theremin was a cool experiment that didn't last long in LP's live rig - it was only around for the A Thousand Suns tours. Mike used it on When They Come For Me too.

Yeah, but they only use it for two songs so I can see why it probably wouldn't be an important aspect of the live setup to them.

I wish they'd use it more in their gigs, but I don't think Mike knows how to play it well :D

And I guess mike uses it more like a filter, as in here :

The video quality, the melody and the guy's skin color and movements..... All of this made me think of old horror movies

I believe this has been covered before. Another note: What's unique is not just that it's a theremin, but it's a theremin that Mike is using to control a filter cutoff instead of using it as a sound producing instruments (as the video above demonstrates). I imagine he does this because A) It's cool, very cool and B) It keeps his hand free in a sense, instead of finding a physical knob or slider to move.
