Their doing the soundtrack and the score, I think. Soundtracks have full songs. I think what would most likely happen is that the soundtrack will be remixes or alternate takes of songs from their existing library of music.
I found a new interview in which Mike says "We're doing the soundtrack/score"
Mike said score "slash" soundtrack. So, and I'm only hypothesizing, I'm thinking it'll be mostly instrumentals, old songs, remixes, and one or two new full songs. Glad to see the band is still doing some creative song writing. I'm sure some of the stuff they're doing will get transitioned into their next album instead of the score!
It is interesting on an academic level that Linkin Park is working on music for a score and their next album simultaneously!
Damnit, we need a release date already. I can't wait to hear LP and I absolutely LOVE film scores--- a more cinematic LP? Fuck yes.
Another thing that seems interesting to me is, will the OST fall under the deal with Warner or will they release it independently?
It's part of the Warner contract. Warner gets money, and gets paid on everything the band releases. Even LPU Demo CDs. This unfortunately will stay the case as long as the band stays with Warner. Once they (hopefully) go indie in a few years, it'll be a totally different story for future releases.
Wouldn't that mean this OST (which is basically an album) is going to be one of their last albums to be for the Warner contract? It's completely new music so.. Knowing that they still have to do like what, 2 albums for Warner? That would mean that this album and the next one are the last ones, is it not? You never know.
