So the Oscars just got over a few hours back and I thought I would post the list of winners here:

    Best Picture:

Argo – Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck, and George Clooney
Amour – Margaret Menegoz, Stefan Arndt, Veit Heiduschka, and Michael Katz
Beasts of the Southern Wild – Dan Janvey, Josh Penn, and Michael Gottwald
Django Unchained – Stacey Sher, Reginald Hudlin, and Pilar Savone
Les Misérables – Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Debra Hayward, and Cameron Mackintosh
Life of Pi – Gil Netter, Ang Lee, and David Womark
Lincoln – Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy
Silver Linings Playbook – Donna Gigliotti, Bruce Cohen, and Jonathan Gordon
Zero Dark Thirty – Mark Boal, Kathryn Bigelow, and Megan Ellison

^YES! YESSS! I was hoping Argo would win.

    Best Director:

Ang Lee – Life of Pi
    Michael Haneke – Amour
David O. Russell – Silver Linings Playbook
    Steven Spielberg – Lincoln
Benh Zeitlin – Beasts of the Southern Wild

^I think they were confused whether to give it to Spielberg or David O. Russell, so they took the safe route and gave it to the next best alternative

    Best Actor:

Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln as Abraham Lincoln
Bradley Cooper – Silver Linings Playbook as Pat Solitano, Jr.
Hugh Jackman – Les Misérables as Jean Valjean
Joaquin Phoenix – The Master as Freddie Quell
Denzel Washington – Flight as William "Whip" Whitaker

^No surprises here. We all knew he was going to win.

    Best Actress:

Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook as Tiffany Maxwell
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty as Maya
Emmanuelle Riva – Amour as Anne Laurent
Quvenzhané Wallis – Beasts of the Southern Wild as Hushpuppy
Naomi Watts – The Impossible as Maria Bennett

^ I was actually surprised at this one. But I've only seen one of these five movies, so I can't really comment.

    Best Supporting Actor:

Christoph Waltz – Django Unchained as Dr. King Schultz
Alan Arkin – Argo as Lester Siegel
Robert De Niro – Silver Linings Playbook as Pat Solitano, Sr.
Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Master as Lancaster Dodd
Tommy Lee Jones – Lincoln as Thaddeus Stevens

    Best Supporting Actress:

Anne Hathaway – Les Misérables as Fantine
Amy Adams – The Master as Peggy Dodd
Sally Field – Lincoln as Mary Todd Lincoln
Helen Hunt – The Sessions as Cheryl Cohen-Greene
Jacki Weaver – Silver Linings Playbook as Dolores Solitano

    Best Animated Feature:

Brave – Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
    Frankenweenie – Tim Burton
ParaNorman – Sam Fell and Chris Butler
The Pirates! Band of Misfits – Peter Lord
    Wreck-It Ralph – Rich Moore

^Brave?! Really?! I don't get this. I mean, it was good and all, but it was definitely not the best animated film of 2012. Wreck-It Ralph should have got it IMO.

Most Wins: Life of Pi (4)

Wow, ZDT was totally snubbed, huh? Anyway, what were your thoughts about the Oscars? And if you saw them- Was Seth MacFarlane any good?

Seth was actually a great host.

I was really surprised Ang Lee got Best Director. Artsy movies like that, as I see it, don't typically win the "big" categories like actor/director/best picture. I was sad Jessica Chastain didn't get Best Actress. She really deserved it. I wasn't surprised though, and most awards went where I thought they would.

Unlike most years I'm totally cool with all the winners.

I'm so happy they gave it to Lawrence. Almost makes it up for robbing Mara last year.

Django and Skyfall winning twice was nice, but Brave ahead of Wreck-It-Ralph? Seriously?

I don't think Argo deserved Best Picture, not over stuff like Life of Pi and Zero Dark Thirty. Seems like they just gave it to Ben Affleck to apologize for snubbing him for a director nomination.

Brave over Wreck-It-Ralph is ridiculous. Are they too afraid to give this award to anybody but Pixar?

I also personally don't think that Jennifer Lawrence deserved that award over the other choices. I LOVE her, she is fantastic and everything, but come on. Over Naomi Watts in the most heart breaking role I have ever witnessed? Over Sally fucking Field? Over a 9-year old's performance that was good enough to get nominated? Didn't feel like she deserved that award quite yet.

Have you seen Silver Linings Playbook?

They don't give out awards based on careers, they give them out based on the portrayal of one role. She was GREAT in SLP.

Silver Linings Playbook is one of the worst films in years, and endemic of why the academy is not to be taken seriously. Aside from its dubious-at-best take on mental illness it is also phenomenally contrived and cliched, the only "strength" being risible performances by actors who have done better. But hey you get to see her ass in a tight dress LEL

Silver Linings Playbook is about two broken and vulnerable people who reluctantly fall in love. Yes it's a simple movie but such plots don't have to be unnecessarily intricate to be great. It was never the movie's intention or purpose to educate viewers about mental illness, nor were audiences expecting it to. Though it was certainly undeserving of a Best Picture win, Playbook was charming enough to earn praise from the Academy and nearly all critics. If you thought Silver Linings Playbook was one of the worst films in years you either don't watch enough movies to have a clear perspective or have a taste in movies I simply cannot understand. To each his own.

I dunno, I found Silver Linings Playbook to be just decent. It kind of felt like they took a relatively well written romantic comedy/drama, and just threw the mental illness bit in there just because that's kind of the *thing* right now among youth. If you deleted every scene that specifically mentioned mental illness, I predict the film would flow almost exactly the same and you wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference. Now I kind of want someone to do that just to see how it would look.

The movie's based on a book, They had to put the mental illness part in there. The movie in itself was nearly flawless.

I'm not arguing that. The film was fantastic, and she was awesome in it. The film and Jennifer both deserved those nominations. I just don't think that she deserved to WIN over the other performances, since most of those were nominations for roles that really pushed those actresses skills.
