There's enough happy music out there, especially in the mainstream, it doesn't really achieve the same level of emotion and substance as 'sad' (which is actually more realistic) music.

The "same level of emotion"? What does that mean?

I meant that a lot of 'happy' music doesn't have as solid an emotional impact, or harbour as much emotion in it's lyrics, vocals, melody etc as darker music.

I think that that's just you being unable to find a personal emotional connection with certain positive lyrics or songs

I can find a connection with positive lyrics, but too many positive songs just feel like the lyrics harbour superficial emotion, for example by using words that make life sound better than it really is.

Actually, he got a point. It is proven (can get sources if needed) that sadness is a stronger force than happiness. This is due to the fact that we often take happiness for granted. No matter who you are, sadness is a stronger emotion once it happens.

I'm not, however, saying that you cannot connect with happy music.

Oh, I actually know this! We linger on and hold onto negative emotions in order to try and learn from them. :)

But I still don't necessarily relate expressions of positive feelings to a "lack" of emotion, nor do I feel that expressions of positive sentiments inherently lack substance.
