I know this off topic but how many places really don't have a hard rock station? We have 2 and a “modern rock" station that fits what Mike is describing. It's weird to me that Denver is the number 1 radio market in the country and we have 2 hard rock stations (one being like a top 5 station) and other markets don't follow suite.
Well, if that actually is how it went down and how he meant it, then no, I wouldn't be disappointed that he is, as I have always known it to be, a human being just like any of us (with tons more fame) having an opinion. However, he didn't take any shots at anyone - all he did months leading up to THP was spam people's Twitter feeds with CHVRCHES songs and their singer's a cunt for not noticing that but being quick to drop the MTV VMA sellout diss on him in an interview. Mike simply said everyone was doing what groups like CHVRCHES was doing and he didn't want LINKIN PARK to do it, too, that's it. What are you gonna do when grown ass adults seek out drama like high school teenagers as part of their sad, pathetic jobs?
Did anyone point out that churches music keeps getting categorized as pop? Though from what I was able to hear, their church music falls flat. I just stood still and bopped my head. truly weird...
As far as I'm concerned, Chvrches' music is pop, regardless of whether or not you or others enjoy it.
CHVRCHES is pop, but falls under alternative. Mike complained about hearing only this kind of music on alternative rock radio stations.
To answer this threads question: No. They said in interviews that the so called shots were NOT digs at the bands, just giving an example or two. What they say about the current state of rock is true, and they just gave an example, I don't think that's an insult to any of the band's he named.
I 100% agree with everything Mike said. I think he got his point out in a respectful manner. It's not like Mike said "F**K CHVRCHES!!! THEY SH*T MUSIC IS F***IN SUCK JUST BUNCH OF PUSSY WANNABE ROCKER SH*T". Mike was just making a point about there being too many indie bands out there and not enough musicians trying to take risks. The members of CHVRCHES have really thin skin and get offended way too easily. It's like that guy you know that always throws a tantrum when you mispronounce his last name.
Alternative pop is technically indie pop, and it's been around since the 90s. Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know" is a good example of this.
You guys can all make that distinction if you want ... but I don't think that it's all important in the context of this discussion; my only point was that Chvrches' songs are definitely pop and definitely not rock songs. Now, whether or not they get played on rock stations somewhere in the world, I don't know.
Will say I barely gave a fuck about Chvches before all this shit broke, now I love them. So thanks Mike. They're absolutely a pop group though. But like 80's synth, Police type shit. Which is great.
