LP needs to get out of the mindset of writing songs(formulaic stuff) and instead focus on creating interesting sounds and audible landscapes. I love a good vocal melody accompanied with piano as much as everybody else, but not every track on a record needs to follow the idea of there being a "core song underneath all the noise". Instead use these moments of clarity as small breaks between the chaos and exploration(ALA When They Come For Me and The Catalyst).
I think that it's the "core songs" that actually need work. The band have mastered making interesting sounds, but those sounds aren't much when the same-old songwriting approaches are used.
I'm with you on this one. I know lyrically it may not be the strongest, but it became a bit of an anthem for me in some ways this past year. I love its sound, though.
It's a good album . I don't really care about "angsty" lyrics or whatever. I still slightly prefer Hybrid Theory, but ETR and BTH are some of my favourite songs by the band.
