I agree with all this to an extent, but I can now see Chester and Mike facepalming and being like "ugh everything we do makes them angry? Why do they take it all so seriously?!"

LP misunderstand the reasons behind people criticising.. IT'S BECAUSE WE THINK YOU CAN DO BETTER. It's not like Nickelback, where they suck anyway and we don't bother commenting at all.

Mike did go out of his way to condescend a portion of fans who loved the nu-metal Linkin Park though, and that was wrong. Chester was mean with his comment (now edited out of the video)

I dunno, this seemed like an opportunity for Linkin Park to really become self aware of how the world percieves them.. a grounding moment.

Don't forget your roots LP. I'd be pretty pissed if Metallica started doing Polka, or if The Roots brought in Carrot Top to help write one of their songs.

Use this opportunity to become more self aware, don't start putting down groups of fans because they don't "get" what you're doing, come on.. this isn't a cult.

They're doing what they want to do, what feels right to them in the moment. FFS, to act this entitled and say an artist is morally in the wrong or whatever for making art and expressing themselves differently to how you would prefer is straight-up, like I said, inexcusable. But, somehow, you think acting like that is okay ... and the band having a little fun during rehearsal is them going too far. :disgust:

You and the band members are not the same. You are your own person, Shinoda is his own person. You want different things. You can't go acting like what you want is right and what they want is wrong.

I don't really know how people can still think that to be honest, I feel it hasn't aged that well at all, I actually think it's my least liked album from them right now. I sincerely hope they never do Nu Metal again unless they radicalize the shit out of it.
I would prefer they do another album in the style of ATS or MTM as I feel there's still plenty of room for more of that.

It's just funny because it's their most commercially-successful album with singles that were mainstream smash hits. On top of that, both instrumentally and lyrically, it is so (deliberately) unsophisticated

Yet, it's beloved by music snobs simply because it's heavy or something

To be fair, at the time the album came out those lyrics seemed to resonate with a lot of people. It was just different and new back then.

LP and other bands out there owe their fans nothing. They did what they liked to make a life and as a result they gave you good music and material to be inspired by and You liked it. Like it so much that you called yourself a fan. It wasn't like they begged you to buy their music or something. Ok?
What are you gonna do next? Take a divorce? You gonna leave lp? What about the kids?
Linkin park fans weren't the only people who bought the hybrid theory. There were guns n roses fans , metalica fans , limp bismuth fans , korn fans , ... . So seriously good music didn't need you or any other linkin park fan to be sold. But they are not a.h. s and they love their fans and that can't give them any reason to make some stupid genre music forever ( i actually liked new metal back then.)
About this video I think the band saw that Indian band's by metal cover of heavy and got a little mad about it. They're not mocking lp fans.

Personally I wouldn't feel that making music that was to me as easy as remembering how to ride a bicycle would be at all creatively satisfying.

Beyond whether it's easy or hard, it should be true to you as a creator and express what you're looking to express. What that is, and the methods/options you have in terms of how to approach it, should naturally change over time as you change over time, as you improve yourself and find new inspiration.

Not that my opinion really matters but as a musician myself, I think LP has misinterpreted what many fans of their original works want.

I am a passionate fan of everything they have done. Demos included ("She Couldn't" was very different from HT and proved the band could be versatile back then, same goes for "My December".) HT, Reanimation, and Meteora speak to me on a nostalgic level, MTM speaks to me on a lyrical and mature level, ATS speaks to my ambitions. There were some amazing tracks on LT that made me feel nostalgic but also, LT felt a little disjointed. Even THP felt disjointed to me. They were on the right track but didn't quite hit the mark. Lost in the Echo, in my opinion, was really the track that did hit the mark.

Anyway, the jist is that they've done some different stuff which is really awesome. Reanimation was totally different from HT (literally rewriting many songs). I think what their longtime fans truly want is not for Linkin Park to just stick to Nu-metal because that would be naive. Personally, I would love for them to make it an additive process. Sure, these new styles are very different. But can you BLEND that difference into the styles you have established? Can you take HT and slam some ATS in there? Could you take "Heavy" and throw a little "In the End", "My December", "The Little Things Give You Away" and "Waiting for the End" in there? You see, they have a lot of tools at their disposal. I think they should make use of them in addition to whatever new style they pursue. Each album is something new and unique while nothing is forgotten. Sure, all the kids that listened to the first albums are grown now. But I don't know anyone that doesn't want to stay young at heart. Think about if they had that intensity of HT with the wisdom of MTM or ATS?

Am I wrong in wanting to know what that genre bending culmination would sound like? That being said, if I have to say one thing positive about "Heavy", it's that it makes good use of the word "feature" for the artist. Still, I must say that the lyrics are uninspired for me after listening to the depth of lyricism in MTM and ATS. Again, just my opinion. Take it or leave it. *Shrugs*

You're not wrong for wanting what, but the band isn't wrong to do what they themselves would like to do.

Even if they were receptive to fans' ideas about what they should do - and the band is absolutely not obligated to be - the way that these people behave, from what I can see, is thoroughly inexcusable. I think the band knows better than to indulge them.

BTW, some would argue the last two albums, esp. "Living Things", were nods to the band's earlier work and them doing that achieved nothing at all when it came to placating nu-metal fans. A total rehash of "Hybrid Theory", along with being totally redundant, is zero guarantee of anything on that front.

It is obvious that they not addressed all HT fans but people that always try to force them to just do that (despite that it was more in a chilling, funny warm up phase). But oh well, there are certain people that will feel offended and coin it as if they mock all HT fans :-D

That said, that Reggae version is awesome!

You do not get to define what their roots are. You were not with the band when they struggled through everything to reach where they are today.
Just because you bought their album, it doesn't mean you are entitled to anything. Fans need to get over themselves

Okay, this is seriously getting ridiculous.

Linkin Park does not need to give special treatment to nu-metal fans. At all. Stop acting like they're disrespecting people by laughing about how nu-metal sucks.

Look at when I joined the site. 2003. I've been around. It's okay, people. You can admit that nu-metal sucks.

And for fuck's sake, stop talking about how cool it would be for the band to go back to the nu-metal style. As someone pointed out earlier, nu-metal is now only 33% of their discography.

But even more damning, I should point out, is this. It is 2017. The last nu-metal album was in 2003.

    WHO WANTS TO MATH?

    2017 - 2003 = 14

The band has been doing things that aren't nu-metal for 14 years (technically 13 until March 23). Fourteen. Years. Meteora is old enough to fucking look up porn, lie about its age, and treat itself like a popular Michael Jackson song about not being defeated.

    How long is 14 years?

Let me put this into perspective:

    - Wicked opens up for the very first time in San Francisco in June 2003.
    - Finding Nemo opens in May 2003. Movies we have NOT received yet: The Incredibles, Cars, WALL-E.
    - The Harry Potter book series IS STILL BEING WRITTEN. Book 5, The Order of the Phoenix, doesn't come out until June 21, 2003.
    - When Meteora came out, some actors and movie crew were working on a little-known film called Pirates of the Caribbean. It comes out June 28th.
    - A company was working on renaming their Phoenix browser into something more likeable. They try Firebird, realize it sounds kinda lame, and in February of 2004, decide on the name Firefox.
    - Cristiano Ronaldo DEBUTED in 2003.
    - The New Horizons spacecraft left Earth for Pluto in 2006. It passed Pluto in 2015. That's right, if you were to take a hypothetical trip to Pluto and back starting on the release of the last nu-metal record, you would've reached Pluto, and be halfway back home. You've literally traveled the length of the solar system plus some change since Meteora.
    - The President of the United States was George W. Bush. In his FIRST term as President. It was 2 Presidents ago.
    - Friends is still on the air.
    - RONALD REAGAN IS STILL ALIVE.
    - The term "wardrobe malfunction" doesn't exist for another year.
    - YouTube doesn't exist yet.
    - Neither does Yelp.
    - Or Reddit, or its predecessor Digg.
    - Or GMail.
    - Or Facebook.
    - Or Myspace.
    - Or Wordpress.

A LOT OF SHIT HAS HAPPENED SINCE NU-METAL. Let it go. I think a genre abandoned for so long it's old enough to be in high school is fair play for the band to make fun of.

But Dangerkids, Limp Bizkit, and some no name band we have never heard of are keeping the genre alive :kappa:

A+ post. I was in elementary school the last time a good nu-metal album came out. Which was actually Meteora

THANK YOU. THANK YOU, and did I say THANK YOU?

This honestly could be your best post ever. I cannot put into words how absolutely on the money this post is. I'm voting this individual post as best post in next year's LPA awards since I didn't vote this year . @Joe, mark my vote for this.

If you can call Limp Bizkit alive. Stampede of the Disco Elephants is becoming like their Chinese Democracy. Mind you, given the tracks already released of that album, it's probably for the best. The one that was supposedly to only be released on tape and sold at shows, which never happened, was an abomination, as was one with Lil Wayne. They are a prime example of why nu metal is now completely irrelevant.
