I expected it to debut lower than THP, but I thought it'd still take #1 since there are no new big releases this week. Didn't know Kendrick Lamar's album was still selling that well over a month later, that's the more surprising part. Then again there hasn't been a whole ton of big releases since then. I think for a nearly 20yr old band that's changed so often to debut at these numbers is still good in its own right.

I mean, again... 20 year old band with a..."controversial" release, against arguably THE musical entertainer of the day.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

When The Hunting Party came out, album streams were not yet being including as an "album sale." So that album sold ~110k physical copies its first week, with no concrete numbers on streaming.

One More Light has sold ~35k physical copies its first week, with streaming numbers boosting the "sales" number to ~90k?

    Is this right?

For singles, radio airplay, streaming and use in Youtube has counted since 2013 ish, but for albums it started at December 2014, which is after THP came out. They added on-demand audio subscriptions (Spotify, Apple Music, etc) and track sales. Ten track sales or 1500 song streams in an album is one purchase of an album. The chart with physical copies is now "Top Album Sales". Kendrick Lamar has benefitted from the new system - in the Billboard 200, he's at #3, in Top Album Sales, he's at #7.

So what I'm getting at is:

The Hunting Party managed to sell over 100k physical its first week, and that number did NOT include streaming.

One More Light sold ~35k physical its first week, + streaming brings the total to 90k. I wonder if that's including all the copies that were "sold" along with tickets.

Yep. OML is gonna sell less than THP. There's actually a lot of reasons other than low interest: pure album sales are decreasing fast, plus streaming is at an all time high. I'm expecting it to be a little higher, but 35k physical is strangely low for physical album sales. Billboard has said this was a quiet week. The lowest #1 so far this year was Hndrxx by Future with 48k pure sales and 121 album equivalent units. THP was notable because that week was the first time in 2014 to have the top 3 - Lana del Rey, Sam Smith and LP - having more than 100k copies sold each. I don't know if the ones sold with tickets were included yet.

EDIT: for the sales chart it's at 54% building, and for the overall album equivs, it's at 46%. We could very well be seeing only half of sales to be sold the next week.

The Sales plus Streaming chart isn't official yet.

It won't be official until Friday.

It's only about 50% complete at the moment.

Okay that makes way more sense. There's still time for things to even out. Obviously One More Light was going to sell less physical copies than The Hunting Party, because that's how it goes for physical copies of music in 2017.

Totally. It's crazy how much streaming has advanced and grown in the industry since 2014 even. It's growing incredibly fast.

    I still don't like it though. :p

Omg, people are really going crazy! And what is to them that LP's newst album isn't selling well because as far as I can see they aren't even fans. Most of them didn't even know LP has had these many albums since MTM. People are just cruel and it's no wonder Chester went crazy. One comment especially stand out: "now all you need is a wrecking ball". Wtf?

Nope. The number of 35k is only mid week. Based on early projections, OML will sell around 85k physical copies, way ahead of Harry or Kendrick. Harry would sell 42k while Kendrick would sell 25k physical copies.

Note - SPS means Sales Plus Streaming.

Seriously tho, if it weren't for streaming, LP would have had their 5th no.1 studio album.

I'm surprised. I thought LP was huge in Germany? Or have they become a legacy act at this point as well?

Well, 3 years ago THP also was #1. Dont know if "Schlager"music and Rammstein are so much stronger or if the new direction gave it to them.

Okay, so The Hunting Party sold ~110k physical, One More Light will be ~85k.

That seems like a pretty natural drop-off. But according to the True to the Artist video, they were hoping for a bigger response. If the response to THP was a "niche" response, it's hard to say One More Light is anything bigger.

We probably won't actually know the final returns till Sunday ish. Either way anything above 80k in this current music environment, when Linkin Park are more than a decade removed from their "peak", is worth applauding. A top 3 album and it's one of their most controversial records they've done in years? Not bad.
