Not the vocals, but the instrumental of Overflow really reminds me something off of Massive Attack's album Mezzanine, like Angel and Man Next Door. The drums sounded familiar to me and that's why, the beat sounds just like Man Next Door.
I’ve given it like five listenings now. Now I like every single track. Good things go, overflow & stained, the ones I like the most. But I enjoy the overall style and intention put in it.
First front to back listen Favorites: Cut the Bridge, Good Things Go Solid: The Emptiness Machine, Stained, IGYEIH Good: Over Each Other Needs another listen (Not necessarily bad at all but I need some re-listens to get more into them): Casualty, Two Faced, Overflow Overrated: Heavy Is the Crown (I do still really like the song but after hearing the Arcane version I like it less than before)
First time back here since Chester left us. Awesome to see what everyone has to say about the new album. Gonna hold off until Friday and experience it full blast
The way Emily basically starts slurring the words during the unhinged screaming at the end of IGYEIH is crazy lol she sounds feral This song is like if their third album didn't distance itself from HT And Meteora but instead just evolved that sound
Looking forward to hearing it in full / lossless quality on Friday. Nice to hear a preview of what the songs all are, but the sonics aren't quiet up to par in the leaked audio. Not sure what the source for the leak was, but the levels are a little inconsistent (which I can't imagine being the case on an official release.. since mastering would certainly take care of that). Also pretty obvious that the three officially released tracks have a lot more overall punch than any of the leaked ones (more depth, more dynamics, better overall stereo imaging). That said, the variety is interesting. I expect I'll quite enjoy the record as a whole. I've missed the hype-train and buzz of this community with each album cycle over the years (I started lurking here around the Reanimation / pre-Meteora days.. so it's been a ride).
I very much enjoy Overflow and Good Things Go. Cut The Bridge is a weird song, not sure how I feel about it, Stained is poppy with an alternative touch...its ok. Two Faced, IGYEIH and Casualty are cool, but if I am being honest I am not 100% feeling Emily's vocal performances on those songs. Her voice is much more catered to the other songs in my humble opinion. This isn't a throwing shade or "ITS NOT CHESTER" thing, just my honest reaction. I really like the old school LP vibe on Two Faced and Mike's rapping style. Reminds me of Xero type stuff, you can tell they were harkening back to that era.
I'm currently in the boat of waiting for official release before having a listen. Given I'm in a stretch of night shifts and I'm pretty busy at work, it does help a little. Otherwise, I think I'd have cracked by now. In a perfect world, I'd like to think I could wait for my cd to arrive and blast that in old school fashion, but I am a weak individual fir the things I really love. Anyway, everyone's reviews have me hyped, with every song getting some love from someone.
I tried to resist, but I caved in... Overall, I'm really happy with the album. More experimental than I thought it would be, which was a nice surprise. There's a song for everybody in here. Cut The Bridge Not what I expected at all, but I liked. This was the most interesting/unexpected song for me. I loved Mike on the bridge in this one. My favorite riff of the album, very simple, but I loved it. Casualty Live it up to the hype for me. OMG, the live version audios were so shitty in comparison. Emily saying "it's only a matter of time" on the bridge: chef's kiss, wow. Overflow My hype was high for this one, unfortunately, it was one of my least favorite tracks at first listening. Intrumentals are really good, but I hated Mike in the verses and pre chorus (too much like TOP for me, and I don't really like the particular style of rapping/singing of TOP singer), but I really loved the chorus with Emily in here. It'll be a grower for me. Two Faced I mean, Figure.09 is one of my favorites songs on Meteora, so I loved it. It's a lazy song, but it was nice to hear this type of song by LP again. Pure Meteora (HITC has Meteora vibes too but feels more fresh than this one). It was really hard not to remember and sing Paramore's Caught In The Middle over the chorus thought lol. Stained Mike solo song feat Demi Lovato. Emily's voice in here is crazy similar. Very good vocal performance by Emily. It's a ok song for me, easy cathy chorus. Probably a skipper in the future. IGYEIH Love the back and forth between Mike and Emily in the verses. I can't figure out what band the chorus reminded me of (edit: it was Halestorm). To me, it should be the last song on the album, perfect closure. Good Things Go Best song on the album. Maybe it's first listening excitement but might be one of my favorites LP songs of all time. Last time I was this obsessed about a LP song on a new album was Castle Of Glass (TEM doesn't count). Will be stuck on repeat for sure. Emily is amazing in this one. My ranking so far: Good Things Go The Emptiness Machine Casualty Cut The Bridge IGYEIH Heavy Is The Crown Two Faced Over Each Other Overflow Stained PS: From Zero feels like it could be the next direction after HT/Meteora in another alternative reality.
Best song of the album would be "stained" for me..... Very catchy and has proper arrangement (coming from a music producer) should be a single and have a music video..... Cuz Staaii aii aiined!!!!
I feel you on this! I’ve been saying this is their best work since Meteora! We know how hard Mike has been working since Chester and I bet we will see albums faster. Mike’s a soldier! ‘And damn…CTB is such a fucking banger of a song!! Would love a music video for it.
Ok, good morning. I've slept to it and woke up with the whole album structure in my head. And I feel this: Due to the impact, stress, emotion, hype, and whirlwind of the comeback, I'm having a hard time fitting TEM, HITC, and OEO between the new material. Both "parts" are awesome, but I think that, given that the first three are now inside of me (and kinda separated even one from each other) gluing them with, say, Two Faced, is taking me more than I thought. BUT!! This said, I feel the album is a supreme work of art for a band that barely existed, for a group of friends meeting again after disaster, for a team and crew of workers who are coming again and stronger. (aside note, this reminds me a lot of "Not Alone"). So, I'm 1000% in for this. LP FOREVER. P.S. Morning Listening Update, Cut the Bridge suddenly seems super solid and stadium-sized ravaging for me. Casualty is soooo wild and raw, and menacing. Fun as hell. Overflow is atmospheric, cosmic, different and awesome. (and very political about our times? like society going down the waterhole). Two Faced is really a throwback but I see no errors in it, it's an enchanting guilty pleasure. Love it. (that's whatirris ending joke) Stained is maybe the most poppy track, but sounds massive on headphones. I see it very Post Traumatic, which is nice. IGYEIH. For a moment I expected Zack de la Rocha to enter at the start, only there, then it turns to a cool rockish drum driven anger anthem. From the first from now on I don't need you till the end it reminded me of go away, you, tried to take the best of me. Cool. Good Things Go. Man, this is sad. Sadder than sad. Really heartbreaking. Best ending possible. And then the church like choral loops again to the start and, now I can say: I'm in love with this.
Stray observation: "From Zero" exists at the intersection of QWERTY and Friendly Fire. Maybe that's why they chose those songs for Papercuts.
