Just 'cause you are influenced by someone doesn't mean you're any less of an artist. Bizzare thing to say. Michael Jackson pioneered his own style with influence from the likes of James Brown and Stevie Wonder and the other lads on Motown. The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and all them. Chris Cornell wrote some fantastic shit back in the day. Experimenting with numerous time signatures, instrumentation, the works. Outshined, Never the Machine Forever and Burden in my Hand off the top of my had have some wacked time signatures. They sound brilliant though. So much shit these days is just boring 4/4.
That scares me..a lot. XD. On-topic; I consider Elvis, and Michael Jackson to be musical geniuses. Plus, notified classical musicians and composers of way back when are no a no-brainer to add on the top of this list.
I hadn't considered classical composers at all. Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky are definitely geniuses. Especially whichever one of them was deaf. (I can never remember.)
A musical genius is someone guided by his creativity, that tries out new things, new combinations, that reaches perfection with everything he releases, that carries his audience with him is his musical universe!A musical genius is a true artist! An example: Adam Jones [words cannot describe his talent...respect]
I think there's a huge difference between talent and genius though. Someone could be the most talented person in the world at what they do, but they could be absolutely the worst songwriter in the history of mankind. For example, Herman Li.
But if someone has influenced you or inspired you, then the thought isn't all yours so doesn't everyone involved deserve the same title as well? I still don't know that I think that you can be a musical genius. Music and art are so subjective and just because one loves it doesn't mean everyone does. People say Prince was a genius and I can't stand Prince. That's not to say he's not extremely tallanted cause he is. But I guess when I think of genius I think of intelligence and brains and when I think about musicians I think of feelings. I don't know if any of tht made any sense at all.
That's what I said. There's a difference between talent and genius. Just because you're talented doesn't mean you're a genius, which is why I used Herman Li of DragonForce as my example. The man oozes talent (and probably decorates ladies' chests with it on occasion, if you know what I mean) yet he writes dozens of songs that all sound the exact same. Were he a genius he'd be able to write dozens of songs that all sounded different, yet retained that trademark (and fucked up) sound of his. Bear in mind I was only using him as an example.
I listen to both bands and I don't really see how people get the idea that Muse sound similar to the point of ripping them off. Definitely not on their past two or three albums.
If I had to pick a person I respect the most as a musician and has inspired me more than anyone, which is genius, it'd had to be Nasum's late Mieszko Talarczyk.
