I love Cynic! I thought the new albums was pretty good actually, I'd say it's on par with the Focus. I'd say it's missing a lot of Brutal parts, with more atmospheric stuff happening. The jazz stuff is still there. Lol and the vocoder.

Ne Obliviscaris have an album coming out early this year i'm pretty sure.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to check it out again, I think I had a preconception it wouldn't be as good, without Sean Malone in the band :p

Oh man, Sean Malone. Best metal bassist alive.

But they only really need Paul to keep making good music.

www.progarchives.com - a reliable prog website- 's users have rated Traced In Air higher than Focus. Personally I think they're about the same, but both fucking awesome.

What other metal bassist is a university prof and has a book of Jaco Pastorius transcriptions published by Hal Leonard? :p

And as I said, I will need to check this album out again!! (Progarchives is a great site btw)

Now there's a band I haven't listened to much lately...what do you think of Bedlam in Goliath, Casey?

It's my favorite album they've recorded. It just barely beats De-Loused, though. It was my favorite album of 2008.

I really like it, but for me it can't top De-Loused....but it is probably their best effort since then! Except I wish I heard a bit more of Adrian Terrazas. But its definately their most cohesive statement since their debut!

Excuse my double post, but congrats to THE MARS VOLTA for winning a GRAMMY for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for their song "Wax Simulacra". Way to go!

Wow that's pretty damn good Mars Volta!

For Mars Volta albums i'd say

    1. Bedlam In Goliath
    2. Frances The Mute
    3. Deloused
    ---
    4. Amputechture

The first three change so often though so I can't really say that's accurate. Talking about Mars Volta is the best way to go off-topic :p

My second favourite Metal (well was Metal) Bassist is Juan Alderte (isthatrite) of Mars Volta. His stuff with Racer X was so awesome.

Which brings me to a man named Paul Gilbert.

Oh man, Paul Gilbert fucking owns!

So Isis has announced they're releasing a new album in march i think. Anyone else like Isis or anything sludge/post-metal?

Nice to hear someone who's into their metal!
I would love to hear a new Isis album! I have their last three (Oceanic (my favourite), Panopticon, and In the Absence of Truth), and they are all superb.

Other bands in the post-rock vein that I like are Pelican, Neurosis, and Red Sparrowes. Good stuff!

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of this genre like most others. Off the top of my head, I like:

    Isis
    Pelican
    Old Man Gloom
    Amenra
    5ive
    Keelhaul
    Red Sparrows
    Rosetta
    Cult of Luna
    Jesu
    Callisto
    Zozobra
    Cave In
    Iron Monkey
    Wetnurse
    Moss
    North
    Russian Circles
    Khoma
    Irreversible
    Fudge Tunnel
    Giant Squid
    Humanfly

...Okay that's enough for now. This list would go on and on.

Yeah from that genre i like Cult Of Luna, Russian Circles (!), Pelican and Isis mainly.

But then there's post-rock. Now that list of mine could go on forever!

Old Man Gloom and Zozobra are excellent.

As you may or may not have noticed, about 70% of the bands I've mentioned in this thread have some connection to Cave In and Converge. There is an absolute abundance of quality music that's resulted from that particular ring of musicians though.
