I had a bad feeling about this album, even though I do like all Muse's previous efforts but 'Undisclosed Desires' has made me slightly more optimistic. EDIT: Just heard 'The Resistance' and the "we could be wrong" parts completely kill what would ultimately be a really good song
Exogenesis was a lot to stomach the first go around, but after listening to it start to finish about 15 times it gives me chills every time. Holy hell what a piece of music!
I have a feeling that down the road, when people only like this album because it's "cool", that's when I'm finally going to "get" it.
I'm up to track 8 on my first listen right now. I thought the first six or so were great but I'm not sure about the last two. Never mind not being sure, track 8 is just rubbish.
"I Belong To You" is definitely different. Hahaha. French lyrics and a clarinet solo. You weren't a fan of "MK Ultra"?
MK Ultra didn't do much for me on first listen, and as I said before I really didn't like I Belong To You. Other than that I really can't think of anything negative to say about it as things stand, which I think is something as I wasn't very keen on what I'd heard already (then again I hadn't listened to much of what was released previously). Everything else was outstanding.
The only track that has yet to grow on me is Guiding Light, sounds like something off Day & Age. I didn't see any point to Exogenesis being in 3 parts though, one 13 minute song would've been way better. It would give room to other tracks too, the only complaint I have about this album is that it's too short. Unnatural Selection and MK Ultra are some of my favourite Muse songs.
I just listened to the album and I'm in love with it. Incredible pieces of music from start to finish. "Undisclosed Desires" is my favorite...for some obvious reasons, lol. Derek knows. "Guiding Light" is probably my second favorite. It does give off a Day & Age feel like Shadey said above. The three Exogenesis Symphony tracks are my third favorite. I got lost in the music and the flow of the songs. It felt like my mind went on a musical journey. The outcome was beautiful. Stellar effort by Muse. I will be playing this album a lot.
I personally think Exogenesis is the best thing. Undisclosed Desires comes second, most definitely. But Exogenesis is seriously the greatest thing Muse has created. Butterflies and Hurricanes, as well as Knights of Cydonia, only come so close.
I honestly can say I don't dislike one second of this album, and that's a very hard thing for a band to do. Exogenesis is perfect. MK Ultra and Unnatural Selection are excellent rock tracks. I Belong To You, Guding Light, and Undisclosed Desires are beautiful love songs, Uprising and Resistance are perfect openers and great live crowd pleasers. It's everything I hoped for.
Lol @ the "derek knows" part. I completely agree, for how epic the promotion was for this album...the stakes were set very high and I was ready for this album to be a disappointment. Instead it was nothing of the sort. Great CD!
Worst album Muse has ever done, imo. Undisclosed Desires, Unnatural Selection, MK Ultra and Exogenesis are the only good songs on it. (which means I think half of the album is shit) Even though I like Unnatural Selection, it does sound like a rehash of previous Muse songs to me. Anyone else agree on this? Resistance could've been good aswell but the Grease rip-off just totally killed it for me. Anybody else think I Belong To You is the Elton John-esque song they wrote during the BHAR sessions? Exogenesis could've been a lot more than what it ended up to be. It is a bit anticlimactic tbh. But I do love every second of it. If I had to list the Muse albums from fav to least favorite it would be like this: 1. Origin of Symmetry 2. Absolution / Black Holes & Revelations (tied) 4. Showbiz 5. The Resistance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oTt8Noi5Rk&feature=player_embedded#t=60 Why you should never ask Muse to pretend to play their music. Genius
i think the album is pretty average. the symphony thing is way overrated and at times really boring. but there are some awesome songs on this album nonetheless. therefore, i would rate it 3/5 after a few listens.
