I don't see what's the big deal about having Mike be the only producer. If they wanted it to be so they would, but it's clear they value what Rubin has to say. If they want an outside opinion, let them have it. After all, looking at Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, I'm not sure any change is necessary :D

edit: Also really really happy about this apparent increased work pace. It's much more believable coming from someone not in the band . As I've mentioned before, this will hopefully feed my recent LP hunger lol.

Rick seems almost just a friend of the band and helping them out a little with some advice here and there. Mike seems to always do most of the production.

I think his name is just another tag on the album because he's a big name and also they're close.

And Rick seems to encourage their independent decisions.

I just hope this album is more than 6 songs and the rest being random interlude songs.

I want more songs like "No More Sorrow". Mike is a great singer! I can't wait for the new album.

By the time it's released it'll have been their third album with him in probably the best part of a decade.

Is he saying that they are working on demos that were left during writing ATS?

Still, i imagine it'd be nice to have the opinion of someone who isn't writing the music and hasn't heard the same thing 8,000,000 times already.

I thought the whole point of having a producer is to get someone who hasn't been staring at the work too closely already. Getting perspective back sometimes means knowing what the first impression, or at least finding out what the far away view is like. That sort of thing gets forgotten as a project goes on, particularly when you've been focusing on details. Losing perspective leads to mistakes.

Rick is so hands-off you might as well say they're basically self-producing anyway.

I think the next album after this one will be produced by Mike on his own.

    Good post.

I kinda like the fact that Rick overseas the production and tweaks the errors in the bigger picture and let the band work on the intricate parts.

Btw, there's still no word that Mike will be co-producing, is there?

Rick's production style, at least with LP seems like he's more just a rough guide, a teacher that lets his students find the answers themselves with little help, he's just there as a safety net. He helps only when he's asked to. I'm glad they went with Rick again, he's let the band turn on boss mode.

Mike is pretty much the man with the plan anyway, always has been.

That's why you call up some friends and have them do it for free. I'm sure they know plenty of credible ears.

I consider Rick a band member. They would be so much further if they had gone with him on Hybrid Theory and were still using him.

I'm glad Rick's back, he certainly understands the guys' visions. On the album release, I kind of want it later than really soon, I need to completely get ATS out of my system first off, just so when Album 5 comes, I won't compare them too much.

No. You may not like Don Gilmore, but he's the guy responsible for Linkin Park becoming probably the most popular band in the first half of the '00s. With Rick Rubin they would've been just another band out there, like they are now.

Yeah, without Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park wouldn't be where they are today.
