I discussed this issue with my students and they conclude that's really hard to identify "the sides" in this game, though everybody wants to have clear fractions. Despite this is a human behaviour, it's not very reflective, what socially motivated outrage and engagement indeed should be.

I actually had an argument with my Aunt and ex-girlfriend over the KONY 2012 video when it was just gaining mass attention. I didn't bother trying to convince them any further that there's probably more than meets the eye. Shortly afterwards, the whole public masturbation fiasco hit the news and I just shook my head at the two of them.
Lol the Kony campaign night was an epic fail in my town. I saw a total of one half ripped poster a few blocks from here.
