I know this is a noobish question but, what is a ballad. Is it like a soft orchestra-type song or something?

Not necessarily a soft song, fade to black by Metallica is a ballad ,as far as my knowledge goes ballads are identified by their verse arrangement.

In modern pop music, you can have a ballad with a pop arrangement, so long as it's slow and ... emotionally-charged, I guess.

Ballads were originally medieval poems with a four line verse arrangement. Again not necessary to be a soft song .the unforgiven trilogy by Metallica are pure ballads

;" Thank-you, Captain Obvious, but I specifically stated that I was referring to pop ballads, named for their use of pop conventions, including pop structure. It's not about how soft or heavy the song is; it just has to be slow and it has to be ... sentimental or whatever.

My favourite element of Linkin Park is Shinoda's rapping. His lyrics on "Burn It Down" were worryingly poor (for me, I realise he wasn't exactly going for high level wordplay, but I know he's capable of more than what he delivered). Also, the rap itself was insignificant in the context of the song, which bothers me. I really, really hope the rest of the songs are an improvement lyric-wise. His delivery was passable, if a bit pedestrian. Especially pumped for "Lost in the Echo" and "Until It Breaks"; that "Banksy" line one of those previews dropped was dope!

Ok, so it's 37, not 36. I hoped for more, but it's not bad. Almost 40 minutes.
