I need a tablet computer for my developmentally disabled daughter. She's 11, so it has to be something fairly durable, preferably a screen made of Gorilla Glass.

She's not disabled to the point where its going to be thrown or anything like that, but she does have some coordination issues, and tends to drop things.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Trying to avoid the iPad just because of the cost, but if it comes to that being the most recommended with positive comments, then so be it.

There are tablets designed specifically for children, and so they're built with a little more toughness in mind. I wouldn't bet on them being invincible though. I know there's one coming to Toys-R-us only this holiday season, and there are several others, but other than that I don't know much about them off the top of my head so I would suggest google searching them at this point.

Here's a link to the iPad otterbox page: http://www.otterbox.com/apple-ipad-cases/apple-ipad-cases,default,sc.html

Here's another link that may have useful information about tablets specifically for developmentally disabled children, though it may have tech terms you may not be familiar with. I'd say it's worth a read though: http://ddpcmonthlyupdate.us/stories/september_2011/tablets.html

Here's another link, for a tablet called "Nexus 7" from Google. It runs for $199 so if you want value and quality you won't get from an off-brand name, I would highly recommend it: https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_8GB?id=nexus_7_8gb&hl=en
Unfortunately, I can't find a compatible Otterbox for it, but I'll see if there are other compatible rugged boxes available somewhere.

Here's a great website specifically for parents of disabled children that relates to accessibility apps: http://bridgingapps.org/screen/ (Seems to be iPad only apps)

Amazon page for some rugged tablet cases. Nexus 7 is coming soon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?ie=UTF8&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&me=A3SQAI9BQY42F6

I'd say if you have the money go for the iPad because of the ease of use, Accesibility, larger screen etc.

The Nexus is a great alternative too, but it's a bit small and Android is somewhat harder to use. It's cheaper though.

I have a kindle fire and love the mess out of it. I'm not sure about toughness though
