In this thread we'll be voting on the Oscar nominations ourselves to determine the official "LPA winners" at the Academy Awards. Nominations are announced on thursday morning (January 16).

1/16 update: We will officially be using Best Picture style preferential voting for EVERY category, just for fun. That means you rank each category's nominees. You don't have to use every nominee in your rankings.

Best Picture voting explanation from the LA Times:

    http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/27/entertainment/la-ca-oscar-voting-20110227

Please vote by March 2nd. I'll go through everyone's list and determine the winner before the actual Academy Awards begin.

    Best Picture
Gravity - Alfonso Cuarón (Director, producer, writer), David Heyman (Co-producer), Jonás Cuarón (Co-writer)

    Best Director
    Cant decide between:
    Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity
Ben Stiller for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Francis Lawrence for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

    Best Actor
Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby

    Best Actress
Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone in Gravity

    Best Supporting Actor
    Can't decide between:
Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby
Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby

    Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Lawrence as as Rosalyn Rosenfeld in American Hustle

We should add an award for a soundtrack and one category to set us apart, like best poster design, since we're more used to music and art as a community.

RazorEye, we shouldn't vote yet. We should wait for the official nominees, which are being announced on Januray 16, 2014. It would be easier, easy to follow. We could vote from that day until March 2, 2014, which is the Oscars night. That way, everyone would have time to catch up on the movies.

We should also use the official way of voting, which I think you should repost here, Xero21. All you need to know is that you should put your winners in order. From the 1st place to the 5th and so on. Xero21 can do the counting.

I also like RazorEye's idea of a soundtrack category, which is officially called Best Original Score. That could be our 7th category.

Sorry, I was given the impression that this was our own ceremony, given the title of the thread! :p

Well, It's not decided yet, I guess. But it's good to have at least 5 nominees in every category and 8-10 movies in Best Picture category. All of them put in order with the 1st place being your winner.

Yeah, sorry about that. I'll update the OP too but here's what we'll do.

When the actual Oscar noms come out thursday morning, we're gonna vote on those. Finding a way to figure out or own nominations for each category would have been cool but probably way too time consuming.

Bump because the nominees have been announced. You can post votes anywhere between now and the Academy Awards in March. You can also go back and edit your post during that time if you change your mind.

Make sure to read the official Best Picture voting rules in the OP.

The Butler, Tom Hanks and Before Midnight largely snubbed, but other than that, wow what a list to choose from. I find it hard to root for somebody, since everybody on that list was great.

I can't get over the fact that Daniel Brühl and Rush have been completely left out. I guess, that's what happens when you're trying to push through an independent movie and you compete with these giants. Nevertheless, it's gonna be tight.

Have to say I disagree with a lot of choices this year:

    No noms for Rush.
No Daniel Bruhl for Supporting Actor.
    No Elyisium for VFX.
    No MU for Animated.
No Inside Llewyn Davis for major categories.
No Robert Redford and All Is Lost.

Lol I mean Bad Grandpa got more nominations than Rush :p

I'm glad that Prisoners got atleast 1 nom though...

Are we doing preferential or normal voting for all the other categories?

Just to clarify, are we posting our personal picks for who we think should win or are we guessing who will actually win?

Pacific Rim is still fine, but not putting Elysium there is a crime.
