Excerpts of Chester's voice are recorded and edited into a series of one-shot samples. Those samples are then manually arranged (perhaps triggered by hand, but that's not essential) in Pro Tools as part of the song's production and editing process. The same samples, this time taken from the final version of the song, are then brought to the stage and Hahn triggers them using hardware controllers. Something quite similar was done for "Blackout" and you can see in this video that the band opted to trigger the samples by hand in that case in order to capture some improvisation.
