“We Burned This City” is a new mashup by DJ Nerd42 featuring Linkin Park’s “Burn It Down” mashed together with Starship’s “We Built This City”! It is the first in a series of audio mashups to be released weekly which together make up a brand new mashup album “Linkin Things” that reinterprets every track from Linkin Park’s “Living Things” (2012)

DJ Nerd42 is dedicated to the craft of the mashup concept album, where all the tracks work together to tell a larger story. Want more? I really wanted this to work, and in many ways it does (the verses and Mike's bridge are pretty fun) but the difference in pitch between the slowed down Starship vocals, and the pitched up Chester vocals, as well as the dramatically slowed down Starship instrumental just ruin the flow of it.

It's a good concept, but it's not quite 100% there. I do like a lot of the mashups on your page though :).

    No no no.

I can't stand the pitched Chester vocals. I'm sorry.

I was only being honest lol. It's a great concept, just needs some work. I'm not sure if the vocals are pitched because of tempo changes, but if that's the case...a lot of software now allows you to change the speed but keep the pitch (FL Studio being one of them).

    Thanks.

I do not believe that the issues you complain about are avoidable given these two songs.

I am using that feature in FL Studio already, to be able to adjust pitch and tempo independently of one another. The vocals are not repitched because of tempo changes: they are repitched because the two songs are in completely different keys. Both songs have been altered in both pitch and tempo in order to fit together. They meet somewhere in the middle, in both pitch and tempo if I recall correctly.

This one is kind of a stretch. I have shared it first because it has the best music video -- not because it's the best track on the album. Chester's only slightly repitched though -- just one note -- so I don't see why people think that's such a big deal. This song is a bit silly. I'm poking fun at "Burn It Down" by pairing it with "We Built This City" because IMO "Burn It Down" sounds like cheesy corporate rock, with Mike's rap verse that feels stuck on. But I don't mean it a mean/nasty way: it was just a silly idea.

On another track, I have Mike's voice repitched really far down to become a bass, so if you don't like this one, you're gonna hate that one. Most of the tracks don't do this very much though. Some of them sound downright serious.

Usually it's the instruments that get a pitch change, not the vocals. And I have a technique where when all the separated instrument stems are available for a song I need to change keys, I only run the repitching algorithm on the individual separated tracks that need it, leaving the drums and atonal sound effects alone. This results in much nicer drum sounds which you'll really be able to hear on the last track that has Mike Portnoy on drums.

But on the other hand, I have the lead singer of Dream Theater sounding like a chipmunk for a few seconds on that track because I think it's funny. That's the most outrageous stretch of all.

Either way to your credit, you've had We Built This City stuck in my head all week.
