After seeing the movie with a few friends and reading some reviews, I stuck wondering if I even saw the same movie. Pretty much all of my friends weren't impressed, myself included. And everywhere else I look people are talking about how great the movie is. It's a little strange.
To each his own. After I saw it, I'm pretty sure not everyone liked the movie. I loved it myself, but I do understand why people dislike it, especially the derivative nature of the movie. Whether that is a good thing (as explained by Minus) or a bad thing is up to the viewer.
It wasn't really the derivative nature. I got why they did that. A little dull as a result but I get that. Our complaints didn't have much to do with that. I thought the pacing was too fast. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a directors cut somewhere with an extra 20 min or so. There wasn't much breathing room between action segments. At least it didn't feel that way. And largely the characters felt flat. Rey didn't have much of personality, or the movie didn't do a good job letting her have one. Finn was alright I suppose. His decision to run felt like one of the only realistic choices in the movie. Actually, a lot of the time it felt like a dnd group. Everyone makes characters that have no connection to each other and that wouldn't stick with each other. But because they are required to be a group, they stick together. As for Ren, they shot for a pathetic character and totally succeeded. I suspect if Han had raised his voice and sent him to timeout Ren would have stood in a corner and cried. I didn't care for the character but kudos on success I guess? And despite the first order being a good deal more malicious and legitimately threatening, they never really felt like a threat the same way the empire did. Maybe it was the unnecessary nazi comparisons. Yes, we get it, there are parallels. No, you didn't need to brow beat the audience with that knowledge.
I take back what I said about being disappointed with the score. I can't stop listening to Rey's them and the finale medley now.

The teaser for Rogue One will premiere tomorrow on Good Morning America. My body is ready.
I love the dynamic of it already. It looks like it really captures the feel of the early Alliance. And holy shit, those AT-ATs look fantastic. And the focusing dish being lowered into the Death Star. Mmmmmmmm!
Really disliked the teaser at first, but I am slowly starting to like it. I am going to see it no matter what.
Considering how The Force Awakens takes place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, I really, really doubt that. I don't think she's going to have any connection to a character in the main stuff, but if she is, the most likely candidate is Rey's mother.
So that's like for sure Rey's mom right? Thank god we'll get a more original story this movie and not a rehash like Episode 7.
