It's great! But I do think they could've left the "CUT IT DOWN / CUT IT DOWN DOWN / CUT IT CUT IT DOWN " part out of the chorus. Feels a bit typical and simple and they could've done without it.
This song immediately caught my attention when I heard it at the listening party. I think it'll be amazing live. Got me nodding my head and tapping my feet immediately. It's one of those songs where it's not really doing anything extraordinarily interesting but it just really gets me going because it's fun. It probably could have been just as well without it. I kinda like it even if it's a bit silly though. I like the extra rhythmic pulse it gives to the chorus of an already bouncy song.
Really curious about this one. Seems to be a grower. I've seen a lot of reactions going in the direction of "Hm, I'm not sure" > "Wait I like it more now" > "shit I need it live"
Second favorite track on the album - it's definitely radio friendly and I'm okay with that, I've never looked for LP to be some hipster pioneers (although they usually do end up doing unique things).
Instrumentally it reminds me of Incubus, specifically Anna Molly. The second verse is my favorite part of the whole album.
For me, if you looked up "grower" in the dictionary it would just be this song. It's so bouncy it bounced right off me the first time I listened to it. It's gotten better literally every time since. Now it's a banger and a highlight of the album.
I think the song starts off in an interesting way with its minimalistic drumming, which gives it a bit of BIO vibes. The chorus is super catchy, but I was hoping for a change in the drum pattern there—it feels a bit repetitive. Still, it’s a solid track and definitely a grower
This is so goddamn accurate. Song caught me off-guard on first listen, despite having been warned. Such an unexpected groove. I'm like 5 or 6 spins in, and it is getting better with every listen. It's catchy af. Also, Mike sounds sooo enthusiastic and charismatic on this, it's crazy.
This song has grown on me a LOT over the past few days. CTB is almost tailor-made to be played live. The pre-chorus has the drums drop out specifically to build up the crowd to start rhythmically clapping leading into the chorus. I can hear the crowd chanting the "cut it down" parts of the chorus. The Bridge builds up so well into that final "cut the bridge we're on" that the entire crowd will sing out. This one is gonna thrive as a pro-shot live music video.
I think almost every element of this song irritates me (especially the drums), I'm so sorry I can hear the potential in the song, but it's just not coming together from me. 15/100
To be fair, the song has such an eccentric groove/flair to it, that I can see why it could be irritating. I love it personally, it is so infectious, and it's slowly becoming one of my highlights.
I was not expecting this to sound the way it did and while I think this could have used more electronic elements, I do say it’s growing on me. The chorus is starting to hit. And I already loved Mike’s writing on this but the delivery is starting to work for me. His best rap performance after Good Things Go. Overall, a solid banger of a track and I’ll continue listening to
The way Emily aggressively comes in on "Cut it down, cut it down, down, cut it, cut it down" in the last chorus really packs a punch. It's a small addition, yet super effective.
Obviously with this being placed where it's placed on the album, it was the first 'unknown' song we heard at the London listening party. Whenever this song starts, all I see is that room full of FOCUSED strangers faces trying to analyse the song
