Title says it all. Bit curious about the demographics here ^^ I think a lot of the users listen to a wide variety of music, but almost always, there'll be genres we identify more with, that are more part of our DNA, that take the biggest space in our playlists, etc. Let's try to see what are the trends ! Again, a poll limits the options to 10, I tried to pick as generic umbrellas as I could but of course it's arbitrary. There are some groupings that I did for the sake of being as inclusive as possible
Metal is around 90% of what I listen to, but I do listen to a good deal of rock. My other pick is classical.
Smh @Qwerty19 I cannot believe you don't have a separate category for country music Metal/harder edged rock is where I came from, and so is my most familiar territory. These days that also pairs with a nice dash of interest in folk music - whether that's the proper "American Folk" thing you find here, or more generally folk musics from different places. Bluegrass, huayno, Tsugaru shamisen - all appeal to me for similar reasons. Also have had a developing love for hip hop in the past year, and the way it has been adapted globally.
See my signature, that pretty much what I listen to the most nowadays. I had many "phases" like rock, metalcore and even pop but when I discovered prog (especially prog metal) it was like there's no going back. Thankfully, the genre is pretty broad. You have everything from super heavy to poppy stuff and everything in between, so it never gets boring.
If I had to pick the three on the list that are truest to me, it’s probably Rock/Punk, Metal, and Pop. This… comes with an asterisk or two. Like. Sloppy > technical, and grit > sheen. A balance, or something that checks one box but not the other works, too. Linkin Park got me into two things even more so over the years, which is why I chose “other” instead of metal. 1, Genre fusions / genre bending, and 2, building your artistic identity on dipping your artistic toesies into whatever shiny waters you please as often as possible so long as it’s fun to you. For music to really catch me nowadays, it’s got to either resonate with me on a lyrical or personality level, or be coming from one of those two artistic places, and flex as well as possible into hip-hop/poppy catchiness, a little or a lot. Oh, honorable mention, I used to love gritty electronic rock/metal like Celldweller and Blue Stahli. Well done electronic fusions sit close to my heart. The grit > sheen applies really hard here as well. But I’ve given up hope that this particular corner will draw me in so hard again like it did way back. Electronic embellishments are still rad, though.
Really interesting feedbacks so far, thanks guys! I'm surprised to see no single vote on electronic music yet. It'd probably come 4th for me. I have a big love for (originating from the) 90's stuff, like Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack or Prodigy, which I guess all fall under electronic music somehow. Beside that, I'm also a big fan of stuff like Boards of Canada or Caribou. I'm not that into EDM in the contemporary broad sense, but there is so much stuff that falls into electronic music, really fascinating umbrella of genres to me
As I continue to challenge my interests slowly, I keep thinking when names like Aphex Twin and Massive Attack come up that I need to look into them. I wanted to add that while the genres I chose are true, I’ve been in kind of a golden era of finding artists that really speak to me that are more pop/hip-hop/r&b, lately. Oliver Tree, Glass Animals, Half-Alive, and Missio all speak to me in huge ways and they sit either completely or mostly outside my crunchy cravings.
I feel like there are a lot of people on LPA with pretty broad tastes. Makes it hard to narrow down to only 3 choices. I've got a huge soft spot/nostalgia for jungle, drum and bass, or Moogsploitation/nascent synth-type stuff. I heard those sounds a lot in video games, visual media, or even in theme park music (which is a whole section of my past interests I don't discuss often ) growing up, so it brings me back to that. I also like a lot of other electronic stuff outside of what evokes nostalgia, especially some of the ones you mentioned! I mean, there's a whole array of styles within electronic to cover. But if I'm trying to narrow down to three, then when I take a step back, the three I mentioned tend to pop up the most in some form. You can see how the electronic elements pop up even in those though (maybe less in folk, but there are some interesting things out there!).
Jazz is officially the last remaining genre with no votes. We need more saxophone solos in Linkin Park
