TOP 10: 1. Tommy Douglas (Father of medicare, minimum wage, and workers rights) 2. Terry Fox (cancer amputee who attempted to run across Canada for cancer but died of cancer along the way) 3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau (Charismatic, legendary Prime Minister) 4. Sir Frederick Banting (Inventor of insulin) 5. David Suzuki (World famous environmental activist) 6. Lester B. Pearson (Nobel Peace Prize winner, Prime Minister, helped create UN) 7. Don Cherry (Famous hockey personality and coach) 8. Sir John A. Macdonald (Canada's first prime minister) 9. Alexander Graham Bell (Inventor of the telephone and other inventions) 10. Wayne Gretzky (The greatest hockey player of all time) I think this was a great list that shows what Canadians value, people who work for the benefit of the common good and people with an amazing work ethic. Tommy Douglas was a perfect example of this. My father met him and said he was the greatest man he ever met, and it is warranted. He created medicare which has given free health care to millions of Canadians. He worked tirelessly to ensure worker's rights where protected, and had a socialist mindset that many Canadians lean towards and cherish. My only gripe is that Wayne Gretzky wasn't higher! Oh well he's still #10.
My Englishteacher told us about it and I was actually eager to know the final results. I'm just sad that Alexander Graham Bell didn't get higher, after all, if the telephone hand't been invented, world wouldn't be as it is presently..
dammit, where the hell are terrance and philip? but as long as celine dion didn't make the, oh, lets say, top 999,999,999,999,000 Canadians list, then its all good
He does more than just play hockey - - he's an advocate for the game and for Canadian sports in general...and on top of that, he represents Canadian pride
This whole result is stupid. You can't tell me that Don Cherry is a greater Canadian than Sir John A MacDonald or Alexander Graham Bell. And Banting did a little more than Trudeau did. Banding developed insulin, and instead of making a fortune off it, he publically patented it so that everyone who needed it would have access to it. All Trudeau did was make good relations with other countries while little 18 year olds did the teenie bopper thing all over him. Also, if anyone saw the episode about Gretzky, the woman who did it was a moron. She kept referring to him as cute and yummy and all kinds of crap like that. And most of the video took place at an amusement park watching crappy rides and carnies.
you know what? Pim fortuin was the best hollander.. just beceause he did something in politics, and then he got shot beceause of his opinions.. (now, don't think i don't think this is wrong, cuz it certainly is.) i just don't understand why it isn't something who did more for holland..
I don't think Don Cherry deserved to be in the top ten. I like the man, but he's not a top 10 Canadian. And I don't wish to take away anything from Terry Fox, but I think Pierre Elliot Trudeau should've been second. I agree with Tommy Douglas at number one, though. Without him, Canada wouldn't be as great a country as we are. Thanks, Mr. Douglas. If I had to recreate that list, it'd be: 01:: Douglas 02:: Trudeau 03:: Graham Bell 04:: Pearson 05:: Banting 06:: Fox 07:: Suzuki 08:: Macdonald 09:: Gretzky 10:: Cherry It was interesting to watch, though. Great job on CBCs part.
Wayne Gretzky = Greatest hockey player of all time. He is a hero to many people, for he helped the Edmonton Oilers bring the Stanley Cup to Canada five times during the eighties. He's the all-time scoring leader, goals-leader, and assists-leader in the NHL. He's broken somewhere over a hundred different records. He's a born leader. He built the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics Men Hockey team which restored Canada as gold medal olympic champions in 2002, the first time they won gold in mens hockey. He also built the 2004 World Cup team which won gold. Gretzky is an idol to all of us. That man brought great joy and happiness to all Canadians all throughout his career and afterwards playing our favorite sport, and he damn well deserves to be there. No athlete has dominated a sport like he has.
I know of all his accomplishments. I'm just baffled at a sports player making the Top 10. I can't explain why, either.
Well you guys have to understand that firstly, this was a public voting thing. Secondly, hockey is a huge part of our culture, thus why many people would vote for him. Besides, we don't have any notorious war generals or soldiers or anything. No one that really stands out. And this was only for the last 137 years (1867 was when Canada broke off a became a seperate nation from the British Commonwealth, I believe). While if it was American, it'd probably go past 1867 to the Jefferson, Washingtons, Lincolns, etc.
The only reason I was kind of confused was because most people don't associate sports figures with that type of thing. But now that you explained it, I can see why.
