You put your right palm on the strings lightly while playing. It gives a damp sound, it's called palm muting.
Or, if you're playing fast, you can just VERY lightly place your fingertips on the strings, so that they make no sound.

it would mean staccatos in sheet music. i have no idea what they are in this. usually X's mean muted strings (light fingers over the fret board). Tell us what song this is from and we can probably help you out more.
I looked up the tabs and the dots do mean palm muting. I checked out a clip from amazon, and the throughout the verse too, they use palm muting.
Is there much difference? [/b][/quote] uhhh... HUGE!!! palm muting is strumming the guitar with your palm pressed on the strings near the bridge.
