They are obviously referring to an emotion.

And personally, it's a clear lyric. I doubt that there are any secrets behind it.

i love this song - the live verison inparticular.

in the line, the protagonist is asking himself why he stays when someone else doesn't want him around ... i think. just like in the original, where he says "why i never walked away, why i played myself this way" - this is sort of saying the same thing.

 

It's pretty clear to me.

Nothing but my own mistakes staring back at me...
This is just a general opener where the writer expresses how he feels, he's telling himself this.

Why I Stay, When You Just Push Away...
He's asking himself why he's still with this person when she just pushes him away emotionally. It's kind of a contemplative question he's asking himself, why is he still there when all she does is neglect him.

No Matter What You See You're Still So Blind To Me...
He's saying to himself that wether or not she knows she's pushing him away, it doesn't matter to him, because he feels this way and she's not doing anything to change it. I.e, she may not see what she's doing but it still doesn't change how he feels.

Reverse psychology is failing miserably,
It's so hard to be left all alone,
Telling you is the only chance for me,
There's nothing left but to turn and face you,

Asking why,
The sacrifice of hiding in a lie,
The sacrifice is never knowing...
This is pretty self-explanatory, it's interesting though, because the last two lines can be taken in two ways after Stephen Richards has sang the bridge. The line "asking why..." can be interpretted as the writer asking why towards the reciever or the reciever asking why to the writer. I personally see it as the reciever asking why towards the writer, mainly because the line "Nothing but my own mistakes staring back at me..." ... "Asking Why?". Get it? So now she's asking why towards him, i.e why are you saying these things to me, why do you feel this way etc etc.

... and as the music climaxes after this bridge, the writer is no longer telling himself these things, he's telling her. The music then loudens and culmintates into the end of the song, inwhich he's now finally expressed how he feels., and everything he was asking himself before i.e the chorus etc, he's asked her.

Well, that's how i see it. Hope that helps.
