This is getting out of hand. I think we established a long time ago that most punk bands out there today are not actually punk.

Punk was a movement of the seventies. We know this, and has beens like Rotten and other bands don't need to frequently remind us of this.

Johnny's just a dick. He's been known to be arrogant and stupid. Perhaps he's just upset that his career never went anywhere after the Sex Pistols, and Green Day has millions more than he does in his savings account?

    Hmm..could be.

"They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves." He said as he hopped onto the 'I Hate Green Day' bandwagon.

Johnny Rotten is very right. Green Day isn't punk. It's whiny pop for people who don't want to look emo, dont want to look poppy, but think they know how to 'rock'.

Your right and wrong. Yes, I do agree with Mr. Rotten when he says "Green Day isn't punk" and he's right...Green Day shouldn't be called punk at all, if they want to be called pop or modern rock, fine by me. I'm not dogging on them though, because they are an alright band.

Green Day's roots are punk. That's how I see it. Sure, yeah, they may not be considered "punk" anymore...but they are surely "more punk" than a lot of acts these days trying to be just that.

Johnny Rotten is a bitter old bastard.

I really couldn't give a shit anymore about the whole "are they punk" (and 'they' can mean whoever) debate. It's all kind of petty.

Speaking of Johnny Rotten though, has anyone here read his autobiography? Great book.

I always thought Green Day was punk rock, a music genre that was first seen in America that's based on punk and has it's most influences there
and punk was the genre from England from the seventees :p so i agree with Johnny Rotten that Green Day isn't the punk he made but i don't think he should react this way
it isn't really smart to compare a band with another music genre and then judge them by saying they're not that genre

Does this make any sense ?

who cares if they're punk or not? They could be emo rock or country for all i care..they sound good and thats all that matters.
Johnny Rotten is probably just trying to get attention from the media, something that hes not been getting for a long time

To me, this is just another of those "whatever-helps-you-sleep-at-night" situations. Everyone can believe whatever they want to believe as long as they don't drag me into an argument about it.

Anyone who wants to fight about what's punk and what's not is in a losing battle. Everyone's got their own opinions on the genre and finding a general consensus would be virtually impossible in this situation. There's really no common ground here.

So I say do whatever, just leave me out of it. But if you try to start a fight with me about it; I'll rip you a new asshole. =]

I reiterate my point...old Green Day was punk, and as they've gotten older, they've gotten more mature and once they broke mainstream, they wanted to stay there so they change according to what the big thing is in music at any given time. Know why they started making more poppy songs, dressing in all black, making big productions out of their videos, and putting on eyeliner? Because it's what people like right now. Back in the early 90's, grunge was big, punk was popular again, and Green Day's style just fit in and made them huge. Once times changed though, their old style wouldn't cut it. The teenie obsession today is a mix of emo/pop/punk. Teenie obsessions = $$$.

Green Day isn't punk anymore, and they're bigger than ever because of it.
