What do you mean? Gorillaz are "dark pop". Why is it impossible?
    --------
The dark and spooky thing made me want this album. As for poppy... What is it? Dictionaries have no satisfying meaning...

I think Depeche Mode and a fair few of Kate Bush's songs are dark.

The fact of the matter is.....there are gonna be people who dont like the album and there will be those who will......Like a previous post said....pretty much everybody will like it....and once the hype dies down....people will complain about it. If its melodic and has harmony, the people who like heavier stuff wont like it...if there is alot of rap, people who strictly like rock wont like it...so on and so forth. Im not saying thats bad....people dont have to like it....but because LP can go in so many different directions at this point, there is going to be a portion of people who are left out.

All I can say is take what LP is saying with a grain of salt, but dont get your hopes up...I want to like this album too...but theres about a 50% chance that I wont

I wouldn't trust Chester at all. Sometimes when he describes Linkin Park songs I wonder if he's making the same album.

"We've got some pretty pantera-esque riffs." -Chester on Meteora

And we all know that was the biggest crock of shit ever lol.

I don't think of Depeche Mode as pop, more like alternative rock.

When the song is out on MSM, then will be the time anybody would have an excuse to judge the new record. Stop worrying about the pop quote.

LMAO, Chester said that about the album. If Brad could play Pantera riffs I would be fucking surprised. I mean the cant even play the riff in Sweet Child o' Mine.

Everyone references the Sweet Child of Mine thing. That was when they were just starting out and it was one of the first times Brad ever tried to learn that riff.

I wish people would relax on that.

I know. I hope Brad has some complex riffs for the next album, as I'm pretty sure he can do them, it's just a case of doing it. Maybe then people will stop laying into his ability to play guitar everytime the chance comes up.

    I personally like that sound.

That somewhat explains Breaking the Habit, which would correlate with what they said about the upcoming album at first.

Maybe some of the new songs will sound like "from the inside"? That song both sounds very poppy and has lots of screaming in it.

Not to get into labels (I hate labels) but Martin Gore has said many times that he's always hated DM being labeled as 'rock' music. The same with Alan Wilder (I know, he left after the SOFAD tour).

I'm pretty sure that Rubin is going to push Brad to write some better riffs. From the looks of things, LP is going to be a lot more creative this time around because they're being told by Rubin to just write whatever they like that comes to mind. So maybe this next album will have more instrumentals, soft guitars, loud guitars, a guitar solo (ha), more singing - not so much screaming, heavy use of synths/electronics, new lyrical subjects...

    Maybe.

I pretty much read zero posts in this thread because, well, I'm lazy.

But just because he said there's screaming and then said it's going to be melodic doesn't mean it can't be both.

I think of Thrice when I hear that.

i totally agree. the first thing that came up to me was Vheissu. it is not old day thrice but more atmospheric with a lot of different instruments. i would be happy if lp get in this direction both musically and lyrically as Vheissu has master pieces.

maybe what he meant by "poppy" was that it's catchy?
also, a lot of the what everyone else calls "hxc" bands are making their way to mtv. so maybe they're heading more towards that direction to see what their music can sound like? who knows..
also, he could be joking. they like to do that too ^^

I don't care about any comments on how it sounds now 'cause until they say it's finished everything can change ...
