have you seen the video to Rain? no? good. and if we're referring to Detonation (or maybe it was Anthem.), it should be "I can't believe it's not Maiden"
Using your dictionary to write songs doesn't make you sound any less like Metallica, Matt. Jesus Christ, what happened to one of my favorite bands?
basically, except Trivium actually sounds like Metallica. IMO, Avenged doesn't sound like GNR at all.
I'm halfway through "The Crusade" Meh... Ignition is alright, so is Tread the Floods, but so far this stuff isn't grabbing me like Ascendancy.
almost done with first listen of The Crusade and I have to say.......................... WOW. I really really like this CD. Haven't had much metal in a while and it's good to actually understand what he's saying along with amazing instruments. Forget the people that whine that they aren't purely screaming through each song. although, I admit, it does sound like an older Metallica album, the songs are great. I love this CD. don't have a favorite yet, but this CD has surprised me and highly exceeded my expectations. Keep it up Trivium! hopefully the fans can get over the "change" and not turn this into a sophomore slump, because the guys of Trivium are very talented and deserve the faith.
I don't even like Ascendancy that much any more. It had its moments (Rain, Drowned And Torn Asunder) but for the most part it's just a tribute to Metallica and Iron Maiden with a limited mixture of vocals to appeal to younger fans. The decision by Matt not to do so much grunted vocals (or whatever you call them) would have pleased me if it had any integrity, and it doesn't seem to be working out anyway. I probably wouldn't give a toss about them any more anyway, because, frankly, I hate metal, except for a few older bands and Mastodon.
He had such a GREAT scream though. Trivium was THE band that got me into the screamy metal with Ascendancy. I miss the screaming
I was completely fine with the band getting rid of all the screaming in their songs. I actually backed them up...but I never thought that they'd go and almost completely steal another band's sound. This album would be good with different vocals.
Dave's going to kill me for this Once you get past the fact that it's really "Metallica 2.0", it's not really a bad record. I'm a sucker for the melodic parts in metalcore, that's one of the reasons why Killswitch strikes a chord w/ me. Is it better than Ascendancy is? FUCK NO xInfinite. Is it my album of the year so far? No, not really. Is it a solid record? For the most part, yeah. But I take back a couple things I did say? Even though I'll still admit that some people are going to flat-out depise this album. 3.75/5
People only start to like this album (Or what we have of it) once they accept the fact that Trivium's changing. I remember everyone bitching about how they thought Detonation sucked, and I did, too. But when I started to get used to the new sound, all the stuff just grew on me. Therefore...I dunno, but I'm buying the damned album.
For me it's not because they've changed. It's because they've dumbed down their appeal. Trivium were promising, but they decided to take an easy route and pull themselves away from a solid formula, the formula that got them to where they are today. No one was badmouthing their style; in fact I think they got more praise than anything from people. It's just a bit hypocritical (in my view) that they say they don't want to be part of a particular sound yet trade it in for another with the similar qualities of that which is Metallica. Idols or not, that's hypocrisy to me. I like The Crusade in terms of it's a good thrashy, metal album, but does it surpass Ascendancy? No. It doesn't even surpass ETI simply because it doesn't sound like they are really putting their all into the songs. The lyrics seem to not be as impressive as previous material and Heafy doesn't really perform this "new style" of vocals for Trivium well. He does a good job with choruses, but other than that his singing doesn't match. It's probably just me, but the "eight minute masterpiece" called The Crusade wasn't impressive to me either. The instrumentation was good, but it's just bland... perhaps I just expected too much from one of my favorite bands. Bottom line: New Trivium isn't impressive in my opinion. It feels more like a step back in terms of originality. I don't know what it was about old Trivium, but they had a distinct sound that you didn't hear with majority mainstream bands today. Good album for what it is, but sadly it's not too much.
