Well I have a poetry project and I was to choose a song I thought was poetic. I chose Forgotten for some obvious reasons: the verses and choruses are all speaking of something metaphorical. Problem is, I cant really put my finger on what the band is trying to express here, or what the point theyre trying to make in the song. I was hoping someone could help me "get" what each verse is trying to say/mean.

From the top to the bottom
    Bottom to top I stop
    At the core I’ve forgotten
In the middle of my thoughts
    Taken far from my safety
    The picture is there
    The memory won’t escape me
    But why should I care

I don't get the first two sentences. The others, though, probably mean there's this thing that happened to him (most likely bad). It won't escape him, but he can happily ignore it, but he doesn't. Probably someone caused him pain once.

There’s a place so dark you can’t see the end
Skies c*ck back and shock that which can’t defend
The rain then sends dripping / an acidic question
    Forcefully, the power of suggestion
Then with the eyes shut / looking thought the rust and rot
And dust / a small spot of light floods the floor
And pours over the rusted world of pretend
The eyes ease open and its dark again

He's in an extremely dark place then he can see "skies c*cking back" (maybe the truth). He thinks it's confusing, then the question. He tries to ignore it ("eyes shut"), then he "sees" the answer, but when he opens his eyes, it's dark again.

In the memory you’ll find me
    Eyes burning up
    The darkness holding me tightly
    Until the sun rises up

He's talking to the person that caused him pain, saying he's extremely angry with him/her, and he enclosed in the darkness, till the sun rises up and the memory fades, I guess.

Moving all around / screaming of the ups and downs
    Pollution manifested in perpetual sound
The wheels go round and the sunset creeps behind
    Street lamps, chain-link and concrete
A little piece of paper with a picture drawn floats
On down the street till the wind is gone
The memory now is like the picture was then
When the paper’s crumpled up it can’t be perfect again

The paper is his thoughts and the other stuff is what's in it and when it's crumpled it, well, can't be perfect again.

Now you got me caught in the act
    You bring the thought back
    I’m telling you that
I see it right through you

The person caught him hiding (?). Then he tells the person he can see his guilt or something (?) clearly.

Remember, these are just my thoughts, I'm not saying this is the actual meaning or anything.

One of My favourite songs 'Forgotten'.

To me 'musicly' I've always pictured it were I live in a urban area with a park , with flats & high rise buildings on the sky line of blue skies in the evening.

To me the song lyricly speaks about someone leaving their home & loved ones to get away from the stress of his life with them. "Eyes burning up" - to me thats 'crying', so his friends & family are sad that hes gone.

One of LP's bests songs that totaly sums the band up.

    Cool. ;)
Just realized, check out the demo's of forgotten to: "Rhinestone"

From the top to the bottom
    Bottom to top, I stop
At the core of the rotten
    Stopping just what I thought
    The sun has escaped us
So I'm bright in the sky
And I'm far from a rapist
    Thinking "why did I try?"

XD what the hell was Mark Wakefield smoking when he wrote that!? I'm glad Chester cleaned those lyrics up in the end!

I stick with my idea that the lyrics aren't "far from a rapist" but are "far from awakeness"

EDIT: Here's my opinion on what the song means:

From the top to the bottom
    Bottom to top I stop
    At the core I’ve forgotten
In the middle of my thoughts
    Taken far from my safety
    The picture is there
    The memory won’t escape me
    But why should I care

The first two lines may be a way of saying "from the start to the end" but in a different way. The summary of the rest of it is pretty much that he's got a bad memory of something which he can't get over.

There’s a place so dark you can’t see the end
Skies cock back and shock that which can’t defend
The rain then sends dripping / acidic questions
    Forcefully, the power of suggestion
Then with the eyes shut / looking through the rust and rot
And dust / a small spot of light floods the floor
And pours over the rusted world of pretend
The eyes ease open and its dark again

Skies cock back probably means that the sky is covered with clouds and it's inevitable that it's going to rain. In the same way that it's pretty inevitable what's going to happen when a gun is cocked. Pretty much, it's comparing the sky to a gun. The acidic questions will be his thoughts and questions about what has occured. The power of suggestion would be his own reasons for why this happened and that these reasons are the only things that save him from tearing himself apart about the situation. The last 4 lines are probably based on hope and how there's always a bright side of things and that someday he'll get through what's happened.

In the memory you’ll find me
    Eyes burning up
    The darkness holding me tightly
    Until the sun rises up

If the person it's about looks into their memory they'll find him crying. The last two lines are probably a way of saying that he'll be thinking about what's happened until it's sorted itself out.

I'm thinking the first 2 lines are about him being really pissed at the situation and just getting really angry about it. I'd say that the second line is summing this up and suggesting that he can't stop being angry, therefore it's perpetual. The next two lines appear to just be setting the scene. The picture is obvious a metaphor for a memory and it's saying that once your memory of something has become distorted, you will never think of that thing in the same way.

Now you got me caught in the act
    You bring the thought back
    I’m telling you that
I see it right through you

Whenever he sees the person the song's about, the memory of what happened comes back to him. I'm guessing, in the last 2 lines, he's talking about how he sees the bad memory through the person whenever they're there.

As semiHYBRIDITY said though, it's just my opinion.

I like Forgotten, since I can perfectly relate it to things that happened to me in the past, things I regret and I want to forget now.

And the Mark lyrics made me .

I love this somg for its fast paced tempo and the metaphor in the lyrics is greatness. Now I've had a pretty good life so far, so I can't personally relate majorly to the words...but can still appreciate them for how well they are written
