Officially proving to critics and skeptics alike that they are still 'alive' and as relevant as ever, Linkin Park have returned with a bang officially selling a total of 623,000 albums (in America) for Minutes To Midnight's first week of release according to Nielsen Soundscan. Due to decling record sales over the past two years, it should be noted that while Meteora sold 810,000 copies in its first week, with 623,000 Linkin Park have officially scored the highest debut of 2007, beating out the previous title holder Norah Jones by over 200,000 copies. Only 5 bands have sold more than 600,000 in their opening week in the last two years, and Linkin Park's "Minutes To Midnight" is the biggest debut week since Jay Z's "Kingdom Come" back in December (which moved 680,000 in its first week).

We will keep you updated as to when the album officially goes platinum, but in the meantime, congratulations Linkin Park and here's to hoping your sales streak continues!

That's simply awesome for LP. I love it. They deserve it for all the hard work they put into it. I figured it'd be the biggest album of '07, but it really hits you when Billboard makes it official, too, by such a great margin.

I think it should be clarified in the news post that "only 5 bands have sold more than 600,000 in their opening week in the last two years" though. It makes it sound like no band has sold more than that in all in the last two years. lol. That would be terrible if so.

    awesome news for LP, congratulations!

the thing I'm looking forward to is next week sales. it'll be interesting to see how many people buy it after the initial week; once word of mouth spreads around and how it hovers on the charts. It'd be amazing if they went Platinum in 2 weeks time. here's to hoping.

They are back indeed and BIGGER than ever.

Congratulations to the guys. They put so much time and effort into Minutes to Midnight, and this proves it surely paid off.

    Well done LP!

Brilliant!! There was another fact somewhere, I think it was Kerrang, where they said that LP is the highest selling band this Millenium, with over 40 million albums sold worldwide.

Exactly. I think LP is going to need another hit single and with project revolution, they'll see consistent sales to get 2.5-3.0 platinum with M2M. I can easily see LP take a 60+ % sales dip next week if a lot of so-called "fans"elect to not buy the album because they don't like that its taken a new direction. Anyway heres to hoping they sell at least 400 k to get to 1 million!

Note: Jay-Z and Mary J Blige each sold 680,000 and 730,000 in sales respectively, yet they finished at 2 times platinum. That just goes to show how much an artists sales can dip if another single is not received well and word spreads that the album isn't as good as past efforts. I love M2M, but I know for a fact its not for every LP fan. Hopefully, as a fan, people go out and support the guys more than anything. Regardless if the album is good or not, i'm always going to buy it because 1) its only 10-15 bux and 2) these guys have done so much for me musically at this point, that supporting them in any way would obvious. Go LP!
