Click here to check out a segment out of a recent edition of the LA Sunday Times that features an article on Linkin Park. The content is an interesting read and includes a brief insight into the creation of A Thousand Suns aswell as an interview with Mike and Chester which includes this bold statement by Mike on his mindset during the creation of the album:

"I remember being really passionate, and saying things like 'I don't care if no one buys the record, I don't care if we don't have a single song that can be played on the radio. I'm willing to go completely in the other direction.' I remember going home afterwards and kind of said to myself if that is actually really true and we're looking at the record two years from now and it has sold 50,000 copies, whether or not we are comfortable with that, people at large are going to see it as a failure.' Because that's the way it works."

That was an awesome read. Highlights include Rick Rubin saying "That song was awesome when it came out on that record ten years ago" about early Blackout recordings. It was also cool to see Mike bring up the really uncomfortable interview we documented a while ago, and also Chester using When The Come For Me lyrics as a reference for people not wanting to move past their old sound. Good stuff.

That was a good interview. Too bad a lot of the haters have made up their minds already and aren't going too read that, haha. Hopefully it will encourage some people to give the record a chance.

Well, Mike said it right. We have to accept things how they are, no matter what.

That's really a great article. I love the Muse reference. It's really true and I'm glad the band has that mindset. It makes me happy.

Reading this, it still seems like they're afraid of going completely experimental...in the chance that the media, press, fans and label deem them failures. This is just a concept the band needs to get out of their head. Yes, deep down inside every band wants to be liked and to have their album be a success, but sometimes sales don't always tell the big picture, or represent the quality of a band. If sales meant skill, these no talent acts that are processed vocally to oblivion and these acts that are conditioned for mainstream appeal, would be more talented than Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin or any of these other influential bands out there that made a difference in music. Sometimes it isn't about radio play.

Sometimes its about influencing someone to try the unexpected, and to broaden their horizons...something A Thousand Suns tries to do, and something I hope LP continues in the future. Thanks for sticking up for quality over commercialism LP. Now please, don't lose sight of that.

It's so stupid that people say the new album sucks. If you don't like it, that doesn't make it suck.

Well that was one of the most well written and smart write-ups about the band I've gone over in recent history. I posting this one all over the walls of my city.

Very awesome read. I really respect LP for the risk they took on this album and I hope they keep going this route in the future.

Funny how we're now discovering that Linkin Park has a "scary" reputation among journalists. ;P Everyone's mentioning that now.

The problem is as it's said in the interview, the entity "Linkin Park" has already a perception fans / critics and the world see as the media branded nu-metal band. IT is ok for them to go a different direction, but it's best they drop the moniker and advertised themselves as a new band. It is misleading to the fans to say the least (the one that brought them to mainstream success) without them, we wouldn't have Linkin Park, and we probably wouldn't be able to have this record. We now do, but it's time to break tides. This was the whole issue I was having a couple of threads back. It is Linkin Park at the "core" to those whom seen this band grow, but to the people that like their music like any other regular artist, don't have time to bathe in the artist mindset, this is not the band they came to pay for, and sadly those people have the right to be upset, and it would be in a sense deemed a failure if it happens. It is not liked by the masses not because it wasn't a commercial success, it's just that's not what we paid to look for (edit; it's the same crap. I take back the first part, just period the people are upset because they paid to hear something that's not there, hence commercial). Otherwise, this album should've been a free album, no?

They shouldn't have to. There are plenty of bands who've changed at least as much musically without changing their names. And if people don't like how they sound now then fair enough, they just don't have to carry on paying for them and it stops being their problem. The band aren't obliged to cater to one set of their fans, just as the fans aren't obliged to cater to the band.
