NOTE: Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory is banned from this thread. Yeah, I was listening to Danzig's self-titled debut last night, and it stuck me: this is probably the most solid debut album I've heard. And it's from 1988! You could release it today (albeit with a little bit better production) and have a killer album on your hands. The only slight I have against it is, as mentioned, the production. It's like the early Misfits recordings, except tweaked alittle. Just sounds 80s, you know? But it's fucking Danzig doing gothic sprinkled blues rock. How can you argue with that?! And, the album art is killer. (see: my sig).
Rather than pick an album from the past, I'm picking an album that's a little more recent. The Killers "Hot Fuss" is a great debut album. It may not be the most original album out there, but it's sure one of the most enjoyable and catchiest albums I've heard in a while. The singles "Somebody Told Me", "Smile Like You Mean It", "Mr. Brightside" and "All These Things That I've Done" definitely captivate that. Even the non-singles are worth just as much and it's one of those albums that I can listen straight through and not skip a song.
I think that 30 Seconds to Mars' self-titled debut album is the best debut album I've ever heard. It's timeless, and it's a masterpiece. I absolutely love the album, and I don't think they'll ever match it. It's perfect. Songs like "Buddha for Mary" and "End of the Beginning" are absolutely amazing. Their new album (and any following it) don't match up to the first album at all. It's different from anything else, has introspective lyrics, and... wow. I guess I ran out of adjectives.
Coldplay's Parachutes The Strokes' Is This It? Keane's Hopes & Fears John Mayer's Room for Squares Elliott Smith's Roman Candle Louis XIV's The Best Little Secrets Are Kept The list goes on, but in my opinion, these are all solid releases. Some have even better follow-ups, notably Coldplay and Elliott Smith. And, yes I know, most of my picks are from the new millenium. Don't know how to justify that, other than say it's my era lol.
Hmm...I'm just gonna limit my list to albums I've actually been around for, because I've got a lot of 60's and 70's albums that were great debuts as well. Coheed and Cambria's Second Stage Turbine Blade Trust Company's The Lonely Position of Neutral Audioslave's Audioslave Smile Empty Soul's Smile Empty Soul Deftones' Adrenaline Velvet Revolver's Contraband
Korn - S/T Stone Temple Pilots - Core Alice in Chains - Facelift Guns and Roses - Appetite For Destruction Avril Lavigne - Let Go (I know, shut up) Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols Weezer - S/T (The Blue Album) Metallica - Kill 'Em All
Hybrid Theory ftw. I don't feel like making a huge list, because if I decided to be not lazy for a moment, I probably could produce quite a list, but to name one... Damageplan - New Found Power
i would definety list Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and The Strokes aas good solid debut albums, great stuff all around... @Friskey- I didnt think Core was not that good, had a lot of filler, only album really worth buying from the STP collection was Thank You in my opinion...
Thank god someone said it before i did In my books, NFP wins hands down. Just my opinion though. EDIT: Hm. Thinking about it, there are a few runners up. Like Kill 'em all. I'd like that so much better if the recording quality was better though. And i was also thinking of Pantera's Cowboys from Hell. Teachnically not a debut album, but if you listen to the difference between Power Metal and CBFH they could be two completely different bands. If that was classed as a debut then it'd be up there with Damageplan.
For Me Lost Prophets-thefakesoundofprogress System Of A Down-System Of A Down Rage Against The Machine-Rage Against the Machine
I agree with that to an extent. It was an amazing debut album, but after a while all the songs began to sound the same. I still listen to it and remember all the lyrics to this day, and it's catchy as all hell. But sometimes the album would get old after a while. The same thing applies to Dry Cell's Disconnected (albeit it was never released). It was one of the best albums I've ever heard to this day (debut or not) but after a while all the songs began sounding the same.
Yep, it's one of the best debut albums for me too. (+44)'s When Your Heart Stops Beating is my favourite debut album so far this year. Alexisonfire's self-titled is also amazing. Deftones' Adrenaline is on my list too.

Breaking Benjamin - Saturate Korn - S/T Metallica - Kill 'Em All Slipknot - S/T Ill Nino - Revolution Revolucion My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love
30 Seconds To Mars - 30 Seconds To Mars This album is perfect in my opinion. There are no flaws I found on it. It's a shame they followed it up with a mediocre album like A Beautiful Lie. Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Probably one of the most unique albums I've ever heard. A great mix of rock, hip-hop, funk, electronica, etc... Nas - Illmatic I don't even need to explain this one.
