i leaned up against a desk with it in my pocket.
    and it broke the screen.
anyone know a way to fix it?

    the warranty's over.
i was thinking of buying a 60gb video, and it still works, so it's not a huge deal.
but if it's fixable, i'd like to fix it.

Haven't you learned your lesson yet? iPods aren't to be trusted!

I can't say that any of my friends with iPods haven't at least had one problem with their iPod.

    Anyways, that looks very unfixable.

Eh you shouldn't be having a 200+ dollar item in your pocket either, Mark :p.

No offense intended Branden, I just believe you need to be more cautious in the future..

There's no way you can fix it. The screen has to be replaced, although I'm not sure whether Apple offers service like that, and what it would cost. My advice: invest in a sleeve or cover slip from now on. And do what you can to avoid the glass from jarring into the screen, or it could be permanently broken.

Omar's right. There's no chance of going back.

I may as well hit you with this now while we are still on apple: iBooks are now not expected to be released until June.

No luck, but now you have an excuse to buy that 60GB.

Although, I suggest you hold off for a while, apparently retailers got a 40-day warning a little while ago about the iPod Videos, so there's possibility of a new one coming out.

I can, because my player is durable, unlike iPods.

I have my iRiver in my pocket (with the screen facing my leg) all the time.

I have a question about mine too, because everytime I try to start it up it'll start whirring, then click, then whir again, then click. Then www.apple.com/support/ipod will show up and then shut down. I've tried the whole restart thing and it still won't work. It's one of the first ipods, a white 20GB.

I have a friend who's screen is totally busted, it only shows this dark figure on the screen that looks like a leaf. You can't see which artist or anything, it's just a figure. He evidently still uses it, because he's memorized the amount of clicks for his favorite artists or something like that. But it looks like you can still see a majority of the screen.

If you're OCD, then get a new one, but not yet. Wait a little while.

EDIT: Anya, mine does that too sometimes, when it gets busted. Usually, I hit my iPod and it starts working again. Try that, but do it with the bottom of your palm. It could start working again. If not, you're iPod's harddrive is probably broken.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that it was busted.
But I thought there might be some hint of a chance.
Thanks anyway, and for the advice.

and goddammit Aaron, that broke my heart.
although by then i should have enough saved up for an iBook and a new iPod.

You can buy a new screen on Ebay for around 70$....then you can install it yourself. On the other hand, you an use it for an external hard drive, or sell the parts on ebay.

I had the exact same problem. No one on the message boards on Apple knew what it was.

I managed to figure it out: the first time this happened to me i just gave the iPod a good wack and it went back to working perfectly but then it broke again. Chances are when you plug it into your computer, it locks up, you can't restart it, and you can't use it period. Do you get a folder icon? or a sad/dead iPod?

If so, the problem is not something that is easy to fix.

It's a problem with the hard drive, most probably, the disk inside it. The disk is loose and therefore cannot be read. My iPod is in the same condition now and I am bringing it to the Apple store when I go to Boston to see if they can repair it.

I'm almost 100% sure it is the hard drive.

I find it funny that I saved so many iPods by telling people to smack them and when I told people on the Apple site, they removed my thread.

I had that exact problem. I went to an Apple store, and the guy said that happened when the Hard drive is partially broken. That's what I had suspected had happened in the first place.

There is a way to get around it though. Plug your iPod into the computer, and use the iPod CD software (it came with the iPod) to completely restore the iPod. You should be able to put some music on it; mine fills up to around 2 gigabytes before it gets to the broken part of the drive. Both the iPod and the computer will freeze up though. Figure out exactly how much your iPod can still hold, and manually drag and drop the songs you want to hear into it.

Every now and then, my iPod shows the support screen that you also got; keep turning it on and it should eventually work.

My friend bought a 30Gb 5G with video, it always paused every few seconds when she put it on hold. Updating the software helped a bit. Then her cat knocked it off her desk.
    Bingo - worked perfectly. :p

FUCK. I just completely totalled the screen on my iPod today. I had it in my pocket, and I managed to fall on my side pretty damn hard. Ugh.

You can't see anything on it at all, it's all fucked. But it still plays music.

    I'm a fucking dumbass. I'm a fucking dumbass. I'm a fucking DUMBASS. <_<
Good-bye $600 down the fucking shit drain.
