We all know this song is based on some awful events which happened to one of Mike's friends and his family. I've come to think that Breaking The Habit could be about suicide, in a "note" form.

    "Clutching my cure,
    I tightly lock the door,
I try to catch my breath again,
    I hurt much more
    Than anytime before
I had no options left again"

He's hurting inside, maybe he's panicking by being out of breath? The "cure" could be a weapon used to get rid of the pain, such as a gun/knife, as if the weapon is what will solve his problems. No options left could mean that suicide is the only way out.

    "I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or what I have to scream
    I don’t know why I instigate
And say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I know it’s not all right
    So I’m breaking the habit
    I’m breaking the habit tonight"

Don't know what's worth fighting for = Giving up? Confused? He's obviously regretting something he's done, so by "Breaking the Habit" he may be ending his life so he doesn't screw up anymore?

"I’ll paint it on the walls
‘Cause I’m the one at fault
    I’ll never fight again
And this is how it ends"

Paint on the walls? Meaning blood once he shoots himself/slits self? He's still regretting something, and in order to never fight again, he could be comtemplating suicide. "And this is how it ends" = Life ending?

I tried to talk about this during the chat, but nobody really noticed, so i'm gonna post it here for all of you to discuss.

I don't think so. LP's not going to write a song about killing themselves. When my brain isn't occupied I'll write my explanation...

I agree with the idea that its a deadly drug addiction, one that's killing him slowly.

I dont agree with the suicide note though.

nice theory. but i dont think so. because this song could be about breaking (stop) a vicious habit on anything (like: drinking, smoking...) nice theory, though.

yeah earlier today i was listening to that song and i thought about the lyrics....i think it is about suicide..because he says "ill never be alright so im breaking the habit tonight" and i think of that as him saying that since its never going to get any better, hes gonna end it all to break the habit....and that thing about painting blood on the walls is kinda creepy....

    I'm picking me apart again
    You all assume
I'm safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again
    "

saw it very first time i read it

in my opinion..... it's not about suicide or anything like that
    it's a song with a positive mood...abuot breaking a habit
that song just gives you power to kick your fu**in habit in the ass B)

Maybe it was about 'cutting' or self mutilation kinda thing, not drugs or alcohol. I have a friend and she had that problem and she it trying to stop but everytime she gets really mad, she goes nuts on herself

I don't think it's a suicide note. There is a sense of hope in the chorus. He is realizing his problems and is about to face them.

could you tell me where the optimism is in this?

    "I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or what I have to scream
    I don’t know why I instigate
And say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I know it’s not all right
    So I’m breaking the habit
    I’m breaking the habit tonight"

it's nice to see some people agree with my theory.

I can see where you get that theory. But, I think it is more about drugs, maybe suicide is a hidden meaning of the song.

Now that I listen to it and read the lyrics again, I think you're right, Mark. I think the song is somewhat about suicide. I think that suicide is a subliminal message in the song, but it's really somewhat like "Carousel" in dealing with a drug addiction.

It goes like this, he realizes he has a problem, he doesnt know why he does it, so he tries to stop....like the bridge says: "I'll paint it on the walls, cause I'm the one at fault. I'll never fight again, and this is how it ends." the last line is basically saying I want this habit gone so Im stopping it now.

I think it is about suicide. A the very beggining, the first beat sounds like a gun shot. Also the lyrics are basically heading towards that direction.

"I dont know whats worth fighting for,
or why I have to scream.
But now I have some clarity
to show you what I mean."

Actually, l.p.'s songs talk about very serious and mysterious things. So, it could be sth about suicide. But, maybe it's about starting a new life (i got this one from "i'm breaking the habit", meaning he wants to stop what he previously used to do... :chemist:

this mayb sound kinda weird.. but its about mike past..?
    why is chester singing it..?
if that song was about a friend of my..then i'd sing it myself..
and mike doesn't have to sing.. mayb he can do something else instead of rapping..?
