The worst part is that they have to pass legislation to say that it is acceptible. In a world of true equality, that would not be neccesary. Such is the world we live in.
Thats good that the Martin government will get this through. The notion of making it "legal" will be a major step for the progressiveness of this country. The fact that the US is going in the opposite direction shows how old-fashioned the ideals of many Americans are. Tolerance like this is the key that will prevent many conflicts in the years to come.
I think what Martin is doing is great, but do you think it'll hurt him in the next elections? I'm not sure of Harper's views on this subject, either.

The only thing I worry about Martin, and this is a BIG issue, is his willingness to stand up for Canada when it comes to Canada-US relations. He looked like he was ready to kiss Bush's ass when they met, and in talks he got nowhere pushing trade issues like cattle and softwood lumber. He and some of his cabinet also support that god-awful missle defense system. Domestically, I like his approach for the most part, but in terms of foreign policy he didn't have the backbone that Chretien had. edit: As for Harper, you NEVER know! I think he's trying to sound all moderate, without alienating his base of conservative voters. You never get a straight answer out of him. And every once in a while you get some backbenchers who say some anti-gay comments and they are quickly silenced, but as they used to be the Reform party I think that he and most of his party are against same-sex marriage.

Canada sounds like a good place to live in. The U.S. is becoming more uncomfortable and corrupt by the second.
This forces all provinces to do it. Of course they can.
Yah i'm sure this extreme right-wing alberta government will have a different opinion on the whole situation.
But like murder and theft, the law shouldn't have to say that it's not acceptable, right? I think there should be no laws allowing or denying the right for people of the same sex to be married. The governments need to draw the "lets stay the fuck out of our citizens business" line somewhere.
