This is something the amazing Green Day Authority used to do many years back, inspired by Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. Here's the only proof I can find of that - http://www.greendayauthority.com/news/201/ It was called "Record A Sawng", and it kinda went this way - 1. They selected a Green Day song (sawng?), probably out of popular vote. 2. Week-by-week, the song was constructed. Every week, one instrument was dealt with. For example, Drums in week 1, bass in week 2, rhythm guitar in week 3 and so on.. 3. Fans sent in their entries each week, playing the required instrument exactly as it was played in the original, but originality/uniqueness was not at all discouraged. Usually, the drum track recording was to be done in sync with the original song (to avoid confusion), and the subsequent instruments/vocals were done over the drum track. 4. In the weekend, the forum voted for the best individual recording, and next week the process repeated for another instrument. Since Green Day uses a maximum of 4 instruments in most of its songs, the whole process took about a month. 5. In the end, all the instruments were mashed together and mastered by some guy. This gave them a beautiful final mix, made lovingly by contribution of the fans. I used to take part in those projects, and I think I may be wrong but I remember Mike Dirnt (bassist of GD) even acknowledging and praising it. I know, our community has an amazing monthly mix-up contest, but its basically based on individual talents. How about doing something similar to this, and get the whole community involved at the same time? I know its a really huge project to take on, but we guys are the largest LP fan site, maybe we can do this.
Maybe change a few things here and there to allow for creative freedom, and you might have something good.

Cool idea! I wanted to do something kind of like this too... I wanted to find someone who was good with editing video and make a video of us at the LPA holding a sign with our screen name as we said the lines of Wisdom Justice Love. Of course, towards the end as the words "Cannot be reconciled with wisdom Justice and Love" repeated, the audio of all of the videos would be combined. I was thinking of having it released on MLKJr day, but, I do not have the means to edit video together.
