It's more likely than you think. What the fuck. First Captain America gets sniped, and now Spider-Man axes Mary Jane? What the fuck Marvel. What the fuck.
Wtf? What a big slap in the face for the fans. All of this was done for dramatic effect I guess. Although the divorce may be final, I'm not so sure about Captain America's death.
Yeah, we're talking about how that was a slap in the face, and now the divorce of Spidey and MJ is worse.
So, I happened to read the One More Day arc, and the 'divorce', as you say it, isn't. Parker was given a choice; he could either give up his marriage to MJ or Aunt May (the bullet was meant for Spiderman). Both Parker and MJ agreed to give up the marriage (and was subsequently tortured by the appearance of their daughter), and then that was it. Basically, the marriage never happened.
MARVEL IS RUINING AMERICAN SOCIETY! Now couples are going to see this and think it's OK to get divorced... geez, way to go Marvel!
I read various Spider-Man comics pretty avidly until I was about 14 and I still don't see why this is a big deal.
So IGN said this a lot better than I did. It's basically a summary of what happened in One More Day and a little intro to what Brand New Day is:
Exactly! It's like they pretty much went "Well, shit, that storyline sucked. WAIT, WE RUN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, LET'S START OVER." Lame.
Yeah, basically. That also means that Civil War never happened (or hasn't happened yet), Cap could still be alive; it's going to be pretty interesting to see where they take this.
The constant rewriting of history like this is what turned me off to comics years ago. I understand different writers bring new ideas and perspectives, but the lack of consistency keeps newer and more casual fans away. I guess some hardcore comic fans might like that, though.
See, that's bogus blasphemy. I thought Civil War was an entirely different storyline not SET in the current universe?
