This is a DVD everyone should own. It includes a live performance of their 1999 album ‘Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory’ by the band, and I was just blown away by the talent and chemistry of Dream Theater (the guitarist/bassist/drummer have known each other since 1985). Since this is a concept album, some of the songs are aided by acted sections to tell the story that is done pretty well. The story starts when this guy named Nicholas undergoes hypnotherapy treatment to try to discover why he is having these strange dreams. It turns out that he is the reincarnation of a young woman that was murdered back in 1928. It’s a pretty cool storyline. Structurally, the album goes through about 9 different ‘scenes’ (12 songs in total plus an added Vocals/guitar solo spot) and 2 ‘acts’.

Dream Theater puts out a pretty lively show. Not as good of a stage presence of bands like Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park, but they make up for that because of their crazily technical music that really is a sight to see. They may be THE most talented rock band currently existing right now. Singer James LaBrie has a great voice live, he even hits all of his high pitches with little or no problem! Keep in mind that the show lasts about 3 hours! LaBrie gives a pretty good stage presence, and during the instrumental sections (and there is tons!) he’s usually there with a percussion instrument (tambourine, etc). Guitarist John Petrucci is stunning to watch when he plays guitar. He pulls off shreds and makes them look so easy you wonder how he’s playing all those notes! Keyboardist Jordan Rudess is the most phenomenal keyboardist I’ve ever seen, and he interacts with the crowd quite well. He flies up and down the keyboard; he’s like JP, very fun to watch him play! Bassist John Myung is the quiet one in the band, but he shows here that he’s passionate about what he does, and you may think his basslines aren’t too technical until you see him in action. He is the foundation that keeps this band together. Last but not least, Mike Portnoy, while the drummer is probably the biggest hit with the crowd. And despite the fact that he plays some of the craziest drum beats/fills I’ve ever heard, it doesn’t look too hard! His ending improvised (made up) drum solo at the end of the last song, Finally Free, shows that he’s one of the best drummers ever.

Besides their main performance, the also perform their 3-song suite ‘A Mind Beside Itself’, with the instrumental ‘Erotomania’, the crushing epic ‘Voices’, and the acoustic (radio hit!) ‘The Silent Man’ extended for more solos. They also play their ‘Images & Words’ classic closer ‘Learning to Live’ and their 25-minute epic track ‘A Change of Seasons’!

After seeing them on this DVD, it definitely makes me look forward to seeing them in concert this spring on their upcoming tour! This is an experience that features a 3-hour set of probably the most talented group of musicians assembled playing some of their best material they have written! So next time you go to your local music store keep a lookout for this one. :)
