This might or might not be news, I think it is. According to Mike, Chester recording State of the Art a long time ago, Mike first heard it about 1 year ago. Mike didn't even now it was released, and didn't know if Chester even knew about it. It was on the WRIF.

It's a different face for concert crowds

When Linkin Park and Korn shared the stage with hip-hop star Snoop Dogg at The Woodlands Pavilion Sunday, it was an eclectic bill. The only thing more diverse was the audience jumping around in front of them.

Israel and Jorge Gutierrez, brothers from Alief, are major Korn fans. But that doesn't mean that they weren't also bobbing their heads to Snoop's bass and lip-syncing the lyrics to Linkin Park's hit single Somewhere I Belong.

Indeed, the metal rage mixed with clean beats was appreciated by nearly every other member of the 16,000-strong crowd—a colorful microcosm of the Houston metropolitan area itself.

But it wasn't always this way.

"Compare that to 20 years ago when you could predict the type of person who would be at a certain concert, things have totally changed," said Steve Jones, a professor of communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "In the past, you learned about music from your peers who tended to be like you, and there was more of a stigma to liking types of music that your peers didn't like."

Still today, the genre of concert music can be so predictable of the audience that background checks aren't necessary to blindly guess each fan's basic traits of race, age and socioeconomic group.

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington has taken notice of the trend. "I hate to say it, but I didn't see any black people at Ozzfest," he said of the 2003 tour featuring Ozzy Osbourne. "On this tour, there is quite a mix of ethnic diversity, but also among genres. There seems to be some sort of segregationalism, saying that you can't love Ozzy if you love Jay-Z. That's totally ridiculous."

More than any other, Bennington's group has popularized the hybridization of American musical tastes to match the analogous crossover of pop culture.

Bennington's passionate shrieks complement the stable rationality of co-singer Mike Shinoda's rhymes, which together create a harmonious mix of rock's outward defiance and hip hop's inner strength.

"It's very powerful and very beautiful," said Anthoula Politis, a 27-year-old student from Greece. "It kind of releases something inside of you, and expresses feelings that appeal to every person."

"We are fans of music, too," said Bennington, "and we don't just listen to one genre of music. And that's broadened our base of people listening to our music and people who come to our shows. It's really made touring for us consistent over the years, rather than hit and miss, in the sense that people aren't going to get bored of coming because we'll have everything from punk to hip hop to ska."

This weekend at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion featured another example of music bridging social barriers. On Friday and Saturday nights, Dave Matthews Band attracted a crowd one might expect at an Astros game or rodeo.

Two-year-olds toddled around the pavilion's grassy lawn, dodging gossipy teenagers and evading their concerned middle-aged parents.

All the while, Jill Brewer, 53, of Spring and her husband, Marion Sanchez, sat on their blanket and enjoyed the show. "We're sort of stuck back in the '70s, but we're not exactly into Frank Sinatra," said Brewer. "It's not that we're afraid to get old, we just like different things. And, of course, Marion, he just likes to look at the girls."

And there were plenty. Youthful screams at the beginning of each number shrilled over requests like, "Pass the corkscrew," and "Honey, can you hold Travis?"

"Baby boomers are the first generation raised exclusively on rock 'n' roll music, and there's no reason to give that up when you get older," said University of Houston professor of sociology Joseph Kotarba, who will publish Baby Boomer Rock 'n' Roll Fans next year. "So it's no surprise they are still fans. However, as a person ages, they need to modify their popular music experiences. You're not going to want to be in mosh pits or sit out there with a lighter in your hand."

Whether it be through Dave Matthews Band or Linkin Park, the crossover of music and subsequent consumer diversification is evident. Its cause is less certain.

Jones relates the movement to technological development.

"With MP3s, it became so simple to put together playlists of completely different music," he said. "You don't hear the (Projekt Revolution) concert list on the radio, it's something that fans themselves are doing. I think it actually has the music industry a little perplexed. You can't really put audiences together that way."

Kotarba links the evolution in taste to the evolution of social tolerance.

"Youths are not as dogmatic about categories of music," he said. "Rock music is aging, and there has been an evolution among young people in terms of breaking down racial barriers. Upper-middle class white kids like rap, and it's OK."

Handsome Boys Surrounded By 'People' On New CD

As tipped here in March, Handsome Boy Modeling School, an on-again/off-again project featuring Dan "The Automator" Nakamura and Prince Paul, will unleash its second album this fall. Due Nov. 9 via Atlantic, "White People" will be preceded by the single "The World's Gone Mad" featuring Franz Ferdinand vocalist Alex Kapranos, Del The Funky Homosapien and Barrington Levy.

Handsome Boy's only prior release was the 1999 Tommy Boy effort "So...How's Your Girl?," which reached No. 18 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and has sold 117,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The new set is overflowing with guest spots, including Jack Johnson, Kid Koala, the RZA, the Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Mike Patton, with whom Nakamura previously collaborated in the project Lovage.

Old-school hip-hop meets new rock on "Rock and Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This), featuring Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda as well as Lord Finesse, Jazzy Jay and Grand Wizard Theodore.

Elsewhere, Cat Power offers breathy intonations over the languid "I've Been Thinking" and the RZA spits verse alongside the Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez on "A Day in the Life."

But perhaps the strangest pairing can be found on the alternate-universe, adult contemporary-leaning "Greatest Mistake," which sports Hall & Oates' John Oates, Tarnation's Paula Frazer and up-and-coming pop artist Jaime Cullum.

Interspersed throughout are skits voiced by Father Guido Sarducci or actor Tim Meadows as his "Saturday Night Live" character "the Ladies Man."

Review: Linkin Park, Korn darken Somerset's summer fun

SOMERSET, WIS. -- The 12,000 fans mostly wore black. The token rappers, Snoop Dogg and Ghostface, both had green on their minds (for spending and smoking). Otherwise, everything else about Saturday's Projekt Revolution concert at Float-Rite Park was as drab as a shade of gray.

Mother Nature must listen to modern-rock radio, because the overcast skies and chilly weather she produced were the perfect bad-mood backdrop for Projekt's K-loving, life-hating stars, Linkin Park and Korn. The rap-metal hitmakers headlined a daylong lineup that included other depressed acts such as the Used and Downset.

An early indicator that the event wasn't like other summer rock fests: The Used's singer Bert McCracken actually discouraged female fans from flashing their breasts. That's (sadly) as unheard of at these male-dominated hard-rock shows as casinos discouraging gambling.

Perhaps the best sign of Projekt's less-than-summery vibe was in the cover songs that the headliners played as finales. Linkin Park chose Nine Inch Nails' harrowing death ballad "Wish," while Korn tore through Pink Floyd's tortured-childhood anthem "Another Brick in the Wall," turning it into a brutal, disenchanted chant. So much for "Good Vibrations."

Float-Rite's regular fleet of metal fans -- who got a disappointing lineup for the annual 93-X Riverfest and were passed over by Ozzfest -- seemed plenty happy with Saturday's event. While hardly a "revolutionary" lineup like Lollapalooza's great mixers, the show was still a welcome contrast to other metal fests' overly macho, F-bomb-laden affairs.

For Korn, who are Float-Rite regulars, going on before Linkin Park might have felt like Kiss opening for Poison. But the more veteran band put on the better show, playing an hourlong set of its best-known tunes, including "Shoots and Ladders" and "Freak on a Leash." Frontman Jonathan Davis barely talked to the crowd but connected perfectly. Even his bit with bagpipes -- rock's most prominent use of the Scottish instrument since AC/DC's Bon Scott died -- went over well.

Where Korn had rampant moshing and headbanging, Linkin Park produced widespread sing-alongs with the melodic, catchy choruses in its downtrodden hits such as "Somewhere I Belong" and "Numb." With just under 90 minutes to play, the band was more focused than at its Xcel Energy Center concert in January. It still had time for pyrotechnics and a guest break dancer, though. How kool.

Snoop Dogg, who could have been out of place, proved right away he knew the audience well. First, he and his posse came out in Twins jerseys. Even better, they opened with an especially thrashing version of "Murder Was the Case."

Snoop's wisest crowd-pleasing move, though, was his comment on which political party he supports.

"I represent the [expletive] gangsta party," he cracked.

Even though LP didn't go home with Best Rock they did come home with Viewers Choice. Congrats LP for beating some really tough compition. Good Job with Voting LPA.

Practice hits hard on the little things

For the Poplar Bluff football team, the song lyrics hit close to home:

I tried so hard and got so far

But in the end, it doesn't even matter.

I had to fall to lose it all

But in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Those words provide a harsh dose of reality for the Mules. Unbeaten entering the district championship game last year, they lost it all in an embarrassing 21-point loss to Cape Central. Everything they had previously accomplished didn't matter.

To hammer the point home, coach Mike Dormady has adopted the Linkin Park song as his team's rallying cry. It accompanies their highlight - actually, low-light - film as a reminder of an experience no one wants to relive.

"It's not like it's in the back of my head, it's in the front every time I go out there," starting quarterback Mark Gum says. "That's what you think about and that's why you're out there."

And that's the motivation for the 2004 Mules, who have emphasized 'the little things.' Picking up blocking assignments, running perfect routes and limiting mental mistakes are musts within Dormady's system.

Long before I strap on my shoulder pads and helmet for an afternoon practice, the Mules have put in valuable preparation time. It's not uncommon for players to meet at 7 a.m. to review game film, and entire units stay after practice to study an upcoming opponent or address a team flaw. Before we trot out to the practice field Tuesday, the offense walks through every running play in the playbook in the team annex.

"Most people think football is going physical, physical, physical all the time, but it's just as much mental, if not more," Gum says. "You have to want to go out there and practice every day after you've been at school for seven hours and you just want to go home and hang out. If you want to be out there, everything else usually falls in place."

I don't necessarily want to be practicing with the football team. But here I am, in gear for the first time since seventh grade and praying I don't take a pounding. Apparently I do too much praying because I'm the last player to the practice field and owe assistant coach Dave Sievers 10 push-ups.

To limit my physical contact - thank you, Lord - Dormady groups me with the wide receivers. We warm up with several short passes, then things get more complex. In a drill named 'routes on air,' we split into two lines and run a series of patterns that Dormady plans to use in his offensive scheme at Friday's jamboree. We run them over and over and over.

"We're seeing how they're run and if they're run crisp when they're getting tired," Dormady says. "If there's a new route or combination we put in for the game Friday night, we'll hit that a couple times during the week and see if they can remember what they're doing."

Wearing worn-out tennis shoes instead of cleats, my routes are hardly sharp. I look more like Jerry Lewis than Jerry Rice.

I do a little better in the run-blocking drill. Thankfully, I'm not in a group with Whalen George, who playing the role of free safety, flattens four consecutive teammates a la Ray Lewis.

When the rest of the offense joins us, Dormady sticks me at cornerback to defend Gum and company. "We're in a Cover-3," defensive coordinator Shane Kearbey says. "All you have to do is stay deeper than the wide receiver." On the first play, Gum zips a bullet over my head for a long touchdown to George. Maybe I can get a tryout with the St. Louis Rams.

About 10 plays later, Gum flings a long pass my way. I take two steps forward, thinking I'm going to pick it off - and it keeps going for another touchdown. Now I know I can play for the Rams.

Following a short water break, it's time for the defensive half of practice. I'm with the linebackers, who review their pursuit of the option. Because it's early in the week, practice drills focus on individual techniques. As the week progresses, practice becomes more team-oriented.

The intensity level picks up as dark storm clouds roll in. Moments later we're playing in a heavy downpour. Practice continues for another 15 minutes before Dormady's whistle blows for conditioning.

Instead of running length-of-the-field sprints, Dormady uses a defensive pursuit drill. He calls it 'practicing with a purpose.' The drill involves moving in pass protection as Kearbey points left to right. After going back and forth five times, we sprint 30 yards around another coach.

"We don't go out and run just for the sake of running," Dormady says. "We try to incorporate individual techniques into the conditioning we're doing to get the same results. That's typical game situations."

The typical practice is about two hours. This one - thanks again, Lord - is cut short by the weather, but that doesn't mean practice is over. The offensive line joins Dormady in the film room to review their blitz pick-up assignments.

"You're constantly preparing for somebody else, and it is complicated from week to week," Dormady says. "Other sports have to change and adjust, but when you're playing more games in a week, you can't be as complicated. We have a week and teams will gameplan for you, so you better have an alternative plan. We always go in with a plan, but that plan has to be flexible enough to adjust."

Another one of the little things the Mules are ready for.
