You thought the "Hybrid Theory" festivities were over but, apparently, they're not: hyperpop's dynamic duo 100 gecs have just delivered a fresh spin on a Linkin Park classic with their new remix of "One Step Closer"!

The new track arrives accompanied by this visualiser directed by Weston Allen, where Marvel Comics supervillain Thanos attempts to build a house of cards while in lockdown:

This "One Step Closer" remix starts off in familiar territory with the opening guitar sample, but Linkin Park's vintage nu-metal style is soon violently mashed with the gecs' signature industrial-club energy, and the result is as bright as it is abrasive. Vocalist Laura Les appears abruptly with a brand-new verse after the first chorus, before producer Dylan Brady delivers a chaotic drop full of glitchy guitar edits and monstrous vocal growls. The choruses are also switched up, with Les singing the melodic parts over new drum & bass rhythms.

In a press release regarding the remix quoted by NME and other outlets, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda naturally compared the track to the remixes on 2002's "Reanimation", saying:
Moreover, the same press release suggests that there will be yet more "Hybrid Theory" content to come, with this remix described as "the first in a slew of remixes of ‘Hybrid Theory’ tracks handled by more contemporary artists that will be released in the coming months." This may or may not be hinting at an upcoming remix compilation, but what is certain is that Linkin Park are not done celebrating their debut album.

It is likely no coincidence that Shinoda, in one of his recent Twitch streams, took on the task of remixing a 100 gecs song, "ringtone". More specifically, the track was 100 gecs' remix of their own song, a version which boasts a killer lineup of guests in Charli XCX, Kero Kero Bonito and Rico Nasty.

You can check out 100 gecs' reanimated version of "One Step Closer" on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

I’d be down for Reanimation II, whether it’s an EP or full-length remix album, always keen for new content

100 gecs have shared a new remix of Linkin Park’s first-ever single, One Step Closer from the band’s 2000 debut album Hybrid Theory. It’s the first remix from a new series of Hybrid Theory remixes.
