Gerard Way recently did an interview with MTV News where he revealed the direction the band will go in with the new album:

Well, im kind of upset that they arent recording it right now, but whatever. Im glad that they're not going back to punk, that would have been terrible. And im excited to hear the Weezer cover band/Watchmen cover song.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think MCR were ever punk. Thier pre TBP days were more hardcore but punk?

Anyway, thanks for the news, looking forward to this one.

I guess they were punk to some extent to begin with... hardcore is an offshoot of punk, anyway.

If the album is as far off as they say it is, it's reasonable to assume anything they say about it will probably change between now and it's release.

I never really cared much for them, but the album should be interesting to hear.

    Agreed.

It'll be interesting to hear how it goes. My favourite songs off TBP were the ones that didn't have quite as much "pomp", like Dead! and The Sharpest Lives, so while I'm not asking for a return to Three Cheers by any means, the more stripped-down style sounds good.

Im fine with a more stripped down sound, but in terms of actual writing I dont think I would want them to return to their previous sound.
