I can't really tell who's going to win or lose, mainly because I haven't seen a good chunk of this year's movies. I'll probably add to this thread some time later this february or so, but I can tell you righ now, if the oscar for the best supporting actor doesn't go to Abdi or Brühl, I'll be so pissed. I feel this year's competition is going to be real tight. We had great movies and performances last year.
I still haven't seen many movies that I meant to see, so I don't know that I could make a great list-by-category yet. I will make some predictions though. 12 Years a Slave will basically mop the floor with everyone like The Artist did in 2011. I predict Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. If it's nominated, it wins. Nebraska will be this year's Moonrise Kingdom. Very critically acclaimed and loved but very few nominations and zero wins. Her will largely be snubbed as well. American Hustle will have the second most nominations behind 12 Years. Maybe even the most if you include categories like make-up and costume design. Blue Jasmine won't be nominated much, but when it is it will likely win. Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. If there is anyone who could beat Steve McQueen for Best Director, it's Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity. Any big visual awards like Best Cinematography and Best Editing will go to Gravity (pretty obvious choice). The Wolf of Wall Street is nominated a decent amount of times and wins nothing major. Leo remains Oscar-less. This is random, and I haven't seen the movie, but Best Original Score will go to the movie All Is Lost. All Is Lost may surprise people with a decent amount of nominations.
So I apologize for double posting but I just had an idea. I didn't want to make a separate thread for it yet either because it goes sort of hand-in-hand with this one. Why don't we do LPAcademy Awards? We could either narrow ourselves down our own list of nominees for the major categories, or if it's too late/complicated to do that we could wait until the actual nominees are announced and then vote on them ourselves. If we were going to create our own list of nominees, does anyone have any ideas how would we go about doing that? Also, Oscar voting for Best Picture is a strange process for those who don't know: http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/27/entertainment/la-ca-oscar-voting-20110227 That's kind of a fun way to tabulate votes and adds a bit of suspense to things. A movie could, on average, rank higher than another movie, but that other movie could win if it has more #1s. Maybe we could vote this way for every category? If we do, I could do the sorting and tabulating since I'm bringing this whole thing up. What does everyone think?
^I think that's a great idea. Imo, we should do the best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. We should also wait for the official nominees and choose from them. Then, we could vote until the Oscars night some time in March, so everyone gets to watch the movies and vote. I agree with the official way of picking a winner, but you should start a new thread if more people will agree.
Don't know, but it was nominated for a Critic's choice under Adapted. Oh I got it now, It's Adapted because the writer of Before Sunrise didn't return for Sunset or Midnight, so it's based on characters created by her. Sure, that's a cool idea. I'm on board.
