The Secret Handshake should really get credit for this whole new "genre"...

When I think of bands like this my first thought always goes back to Hellogoodbye for some reason.

I love their album, so that is probably why.

Owl City is amazing <3 . I've been listening to a lot of music like this lately.

But agreed, The Secret Handshake didn't invent this genre by any means.

Not like it matters, no real thought is put into the use of that voice gimmick, anyways, but to each their own, I guess. :S

I think it's perfectly acceptable to use auto-tune when you want to sing your own songs but you don't necessarily have the voice to do it. I for one would rather sing my own songs than have some dude come in and sing them who wouldn't be able to convey the same emotion or message as me.

I love auto-tune when it's used right. Like you said, Will, I would much rather have them sing their own songs with a crutch than bring in someone else to sing and act as a ghost writer

Yeah. And as much as I'm not a fan of Kanye's new album, if he would've brought in someone else to sing his songs because he doesn't have too great a singing voice, it would've been completely pointless and wouldn't have made any sense.

That would depend. I mean, if you wrote songs and recorded them while making it blatantly obvious that you're using auto-tune, as is the current trend, then if anything you're making your voice sound more inhuman and emotionless. With Kanye West's last album that sort of delivery at least fits with the lyrical themes and the production.

For me there are certain singers who do that, such as T-Pain, who can actually sing pretty well on their own as far as I can tell, but for some reason they persist with it for the most part.

Yeah, but T-Pain is just weird. He's got a great voice, so I don't know why he continues to use auto-tune.

If you feel you aren't good enough at vocals, don't do vocals... you can try, but you can't disguise your limitations.

I just don't think it's a very original thing to do, it doesn't sound all that great, it's generic and just plain annoying in the end...

    Agreed. Auto-tune ftl.

The fact that it's trendy is really killing me as well. Nowadays no one needs skill to be a vocalist. And it means there's no terrible but awesome rock singers anymore, just people singing perfectly in tune without emotion.
