Stand Against SOPA. Maybe it's not in the LPA's interest to officially delve into politics but I think that this can be an exception. The SOPA and PIPI bills can directly and majorly affect the LPAssociation. In accordance to SOPA, if anyone on any site posts a link to any illegitimate copyright material, the copyright holders can shutdown not only the link but the site, meaning the LPA could be potentially shutdown without warrant, notice or due process. Also, with the abuse of DMCA rights there is no telling what industries may claim. Posting a quote from a news article from LinkinPark.com could potentially defame LPA if this bill passes, and while what I'm saying may sound like scare tactics, it's almost close to becoming a reality that could change the entire internet. My suggestion is to make use of banners that link to informative sites that explain SOPA on this sites homepage and that this site takes an official stand against this absurd new bill that's fundamentally unconstitutional . Some links http://americancensorship.org/ http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/12/14/sopa-critics-ready-for-showdown/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/17/sopa-online-piracy-bill-google_n_1099214.html http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/11/24/sopa-a-u-s-bill-that-could-break-the-internet/ if anyone has anymore links please post them. ---- The more people who are informed of this new bill and realize how it can harm them the better chance there is to stop it. Maybe LPAssociation can join the voices of those who oppose SOPA such as Google, Facebook, Mozilla, Zynga, eBay, Twitter, Yahoo, LinkedIn, and AOL. as well as Wikipedia, Microsoft, Tumblr and Reddit. Thoughts?
With how political things get in Serious Chat, we traditionally don't like to delve into politics, but given our knowledge of this bill and it's effects on the internet, I think we can make an exception. I will spread the word about this.
